Hello, I am a new member and trying to trace a Roberts family who lived in Corwen.
In particular an Evan Roberts who was born in Cerrig Y Druidion and lived in Hill Street, Corwen until his death in April 1939. I wonder if there would be an obituary for him in the local newspapers?
He served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers in the Boer War.
On his first marriage he gave his fathers name as Robert Roberts in 1898 and itis believed he may have married again after her death in 1918.
I would be grateful for any assistance in tracking him and his family.
Kind regards

Hello Michael :)
Welcome to Rootschat!
Are you trying to trace his parents and siblings or do you already have census information?
Who did he marry in 1898 and what information is given on the certificate (e.g. Father's occupation, Bride's details, addresses, etc)?
Best Wishes
Morgan

Hi Morgan, Thanks for reply and I hope I am replying by the correct method.
Evan Roberts married Maria Jones on 19th Nov 1898 in the parish church of Corwen and he is listed as a labourer, as his father Robert Roberts. Maria Jones has no occupation but was a spinster and her father was Edward Jones a labourer too. Evan was aged 29 and Maria was 23 as shown by the certificate.
Evan's address was shown as The Crown Hotel, Corwen and Maria's address as Hill Street, Corwen.
The witnesses were Edward Roberts and Winnie Jones.
I believe that they lived in Hill Strret for most of their life after this date but I believe that Evan was born Cerrig y Druidion and Maria was born in Corwen. Maria died around 1918 we think and rumour has it they Evan married again but not known who or when.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Michael

Thanks everyone for all your excellent assistance and I am still absorbing the detail and most of it fits well with the family.
One question on the marriage of Robert Roberts to Margaret (possibly Jones) and the wedding in 1860 in Bala - now as my Margaret is listed in the census of 1871 with Evan and others as being born in LLanfor ? then where is that and how far from Bala is it?
I also had a look at the 1861 census but could not find them there at all in Llanycil I think it was so how can I find that via Ancestry?
Many thanks for all your help.

You will see on this map that Llanfor is some two or tree miles from Bala;

As far as the 1861 census is concerned, when the box for the 1861 Census comes up,don't enter anything names or years or places just enter the numbers at the bottom of the box,for piece, folio then page. You will then see the three page list of names.

Hi
This is taken from Yr Adsain the local paper, 2 May 1939.
As briefly reported in our last issue (copy missing at NLW) the funeral took place of on Tuesday last at Corwen Parish Churchyard of Mr Evan Roberts, Pleasant View, whose death occurred on Sunday, April 23. The service at the house was taken by Rev W.J. Hamer, B.A. curate and in the Church and the graveside by the Rector, the Rev W. Morris Williams, M.A. Wreaths were sent as follows:- from daughter Maggie, Eric & Charlotte, Shrewsbury; Jennie & George, Rose, Evelyn May & Emlyn; his sister Margaret, Mossley Hill, Liverpool; nephew Will & family, Tynddol Bach; Lucy & family Wrexham; Nellie Ben Ella & Bernard; Maggie, Harold, Em & Jim, Cefn Mawr; Mr & Mrs John Owen, Cefn Mawr.
The rest seem to be of friends & neighbours.
Hope you find that useful.

Hi again
I've cross referenced this with the Bala newspaper Y Seren and there is a good Obit there (29 April)
in the Welsh language.
Briefly,
Sunday, Mr Evan Roberts, aged 70 of Pleasant View, Corwen passed away. He was the eldest son of the late Mr & Mrs Robert Roberts, Tynyfawnog, Llangwm, and his sister is Mrs W. Williams 63 High St, Bala. The departed fought in the Boer War and was proud of the medals he gained. He was present at the famous battle of Tugela.
It further mentions that he was survived by his daughter and 2 brothers.

Hello Alwyn,
I wonder if I may be cheeky and ask for a little more help please. You have been so kind in finding the obituary's of Evan Roberts and translating them for me. I see the village of LLangwm, where his parents are listed is close to Corwen and it has a very successful Male Voice Choir.
I have a problem with tracking his parents who were Robert Roberts (Labourer) and I believe Margaret ?? but I do not her surname as there are so many of marriages for Robert to Margarets before Evan's birth. Evan Roberts married Maria Jones on 19th November 1898 in the parish church of Corwen and I believe Maria Roberts died in June Qtr of 1918 (i think 18th June) and I wonder if there is an obituary for her which might list family members. The witnesses to the wedding were Edward Roberts and Winnie Jones and maybe this Edward may be Evan's brother but there is no Edward listed in his obituary?
I have only found Evan with his parents in 1871 and two sisters Anne and Margaret but the obituaries translated mention 1 sister and 2 brothers. His mother Margaret is shown aged 35 as is father Robert but later census show a Robert and Margaret with her being around 10 years younger and never with Anne or Margaret and so it is very tough to track the correct family. Did Robert marry twice to two different Margaret's ?
I would be grateful for any help if you can see an obituary for Maria in 1918
Charlotte believes that Evan married again after Maria's death but nothing is known of this as his daughter went to live away and married too.
I will be most grateful if you can help.
Regards

Not bad for 1918.
She died on the 18th June. (Yr Adsain)
The funeral of the late Mrs Maria Roberts Hill St, Corwen took place at Corwen Churchyard on Saturday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends of the deceased. The Rev. Griffith Williams , rector officiated. Wreaths were sent by the following:-Husband and daughter; from all at Ivy Cottage; from all at Offa Terrace, Wrexham; Hon. Mrs Wynn and Miss Bassett, Rug (Wow!); Mrs Davies and family, Mount Terrace; John Gwilym & Maggie, Edeyrnion Terrace; Mr Robert Edwards & family, Pleasant View; Mrs Thorn, Rug; Mothers Union. Widespread sympathy is expressed with the family in their sad bereavement.
I checked the Bala newspaper but no Corwen news there at that time.
Hope that's of use.

You will probably have found these:-
1901 Census, Robert Roberts, Tynyfawnog & Margaret, born 1847 in Melin y Coed Denbighshire are on RG 13/5246 page 5 with daughter Jennie, born in Llangwm in 1885.
In 1911 they are at the same address with Margaret from Llanrwst(not far away) and adopted son Robert Edward Rowlands aged 8, born in the Parish of Llangwm.
That will. narrow things down a bit.
The Burial indices from the Clwyd Family History Soc are available for Capel y Groes & Gellioedd , Ind) (not in NLW) in the Parish of Llangwm, otherwise Capel Dinmael & Cefn (Dinmael has a Cemetery, I've been there), or Ty Nant (Wes) (??? Cemetery) or Llangwm Parish Church will need to be visited
Why don't you post a Note on the Denbighshire Rootschat site. Someone may have some info on Robert Roberts, Tynyfawnog. Loads of people have unofficial lists of Memorial Inscriptions.

Robert Roberts on 1901 is from Llanfor then Llanycil parish in 1911. Basically he was from the Bala area.

Hi Alwyn,
Just back from a short break in Scarborough where the weather was pretty good for this time of year.
Many thanks for this information and it all helps in trying to solve the road block of Evan's parents and siblings names etc.
I will print off the three obituaries and sit and try to piece together who is who but it doesn't help when they just say "all at ........"
By the way what does "rug" mean as it is mentioned twice in Maria's obituary?
The odd thing about the census 's is the age difference of Margaret being 10 years older in 1871 and so it makes it difficult to believe the later years as there is no consistancy with any of the children being shown living with Robert and Margaret for more than 1 census each.
I will try to find the Roootschat site for Denbighshire and enquire about Robert Roberts.
Many thanks for your help.

Y Rug or Rhug is the big estate on the A5 to the west of Corwen. Good luck with your research.
