Title: Charles Edward Dickinson 1850 - 1929.
Post by: ROSJAN on Sunday 08 September 13 04:54 BST (UK)
I am hoping that I can get some help with a Dickinson family that lived Newcastle upon Tyne about 1840 to 1871. Specifically Charles Edward Dickinson, born 1850 Newcastle upon Tyne and died Sydney Australia 1929. His parents were Utrick Walton Dickinson and Margaret Kenyon. Charles supposedly married a Tamar / Tamara, unknown surname, I am unable to find his marriage in either England or Australia, also unable to find when he came to Australia. Their first child Utrick Hobart Dickinson was born 1887 in Sydney. Tamar / Tamara died Sydney 1918. If anyone could give me any help I would be very grateful.
Thanking You,
Rosjan.

Is this as far as you have followed him,1871

1876  Emily Amelia Dickinson marries at St Nicholas and has a son a year later Urick Groves she is then down in Wales in 1881,with her husband James W Groves ,born Bristol,

1881 Amy W Dickinson is possibly a nurse in Doncaster infirmary,

(Amy Walton) M Barret died June 1881 Barnsley,
(Amy Walton) Liversedge died September 1895 N Bierley,
these two may have no connection at all,

As you havnt found a marriage,or havnt the certificate, have you looked for her parents,
Jacob and Tamar in Australia, how many Jacobs and Tamars are there in the census of Australia, a bit long winded I know, without a surname,
one child has the middle name of Hobart, where does that come from,

On the 1871 census, under the disabilities column for Charles Edward Dickenson is noted "Deaf and dumb not from birth"

However there is a tick in the same column for the man below Charles, the boarder Grieve a telegraph clerk. So whether the disability refers to Grieve or Dickenson is debatable.

Do you have Charles E and Tama's death certificates?

Australian certificates usually give more info than UK certificates, so maybe helpful.

One of the trees on Ancestry.com gives Tamar's maiden name as Vickers...  there is a Tamar Vickers on the 1871 UK census and Tamar is a kitchen maid at the Northern Counties Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in Jesmond, Newcastle/Tyne. She was born in Alston Cumberland in 1849 and is also noted as "Deaf and Dumb". Seems a coincidence that Charles was also noted as Deaf and Dumb on the 1871 census.

in 1881 Tamar 30 is listed as a servant in Brandling Village, Jesmond, Newcastle/Tyne. Still noted as Deaf and Dumb. not found on the 1891 census.

Is this all just coincidence or is there a theme emerging here? Maybe worth investigating?

I was going to say a Childs Birth Cert would provide Tamars maiden name.

Something strange going on here - was looking for any Tamar's on the 1861 census and found this family. Same parents forenames as on Tamar's death entry in Australia 1918!

Hello Gen, her Australian death cert does give her father as Jacob, but Hannah wouldn't have been her mother as she was born after her father remarried,to Elizabeth, but if the poor girl was deaf she may not have been aware of her mothers name and the person that registered her death may have just guessed, there is a big age gap between Tamar and Jonathon,
I was saying in an earlier post her admission to the deaf and dumb school may hold vital clues, they give minimum information,Fathers name and occupation and of course when she was admitted,

I have just started researching the Dickinson family and have been told by a Dickinson family member that Charles & Tamar were both deaf.  Charles deafness as a result of Scarlet fever.
Their parents apparently were quite well off and provided them with money and put them on a ship to either New Zealand or Australia. They were married in New Zealand in 1883.  They may have purchased a kauri forest in or around Whangarei on the upper North Island.  They lost most of their money in the Long Depression and then moved back/ to Australia. The contact told me that Tamar & Charles Children and Grandchildren all were able to use sign language. This ties in with earlier records.  I hope this helps.

Hello Trish

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.  The information that you have provided is great.  My research has not taken me this far, so I really do appreciate your assistance.

Karma I guess, I posted in the hope that my sketchy information would help others in this thread, and now I find it helping my research.

Thank you

Hi Trish and all the others who have come up with information regarding Charles Edward Dickinson and his wife Tamar Vickers, thank you all very much.
I checked the New Zealand BDM and yes Charles and Tamar did marry there. Tamar Vickers arrived in New Zealand onboard the Langstone in 1883 from London she travelled as a steerage passenger.
Charles died in 1929 in Sydney Australia and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery in a paupers grave.
Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all again.
Regards,
Rosjan.
