Title: Gloucester Gaol Look up request please
Post by: elfinwylde on Saturday 07 September 13 23:48 BST (UK)
I came across an interesting tidbit of information on an ancestor and was wondering if there is a way to get more information?  It seems that on March 28, 1838 Louisa Billett was in Gloucester Gaol.  I have no further information except for the notation of register 5/5.
Would you know how I could find this information?  Is it online?  I am living in the U.S. so travel to Gloucester RO is in the distant future.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi

The criminal records on An* state that Louisa Billett aged 18 was convicted 31 Mar 1838 at the Gloucestershire Assizes on a charge of Fraud, and imprisoned for six months.

There is a mention in a newspaper

The Bristol Mercury , Saturday, April 14, 1838 : which just states that Louisa BILLET was jailed for six months for obtaining goods under false pretences.

Hi,
I'll check the actual Gloucester Goal Register for you, which is held on film at Glos Archives, take a transcription of the entry, and get back to you next week.

Claire and Victor,
Thank you both so much for your quick response.  Wow.  I'm amazed to hear anything, let alone so fast.  And of course wish I could know more of what happened and why.  If this is my Louisa, and the dates and places say it has to be, she would have been pregnant with her daughter while serving her sentence.  Totally amazing.

Victor, I look forward to seeing what the register has to say.

Again, thank you both so much.
