My wife's great uncle, Montague Alfred Coiley, was killed on 26 October 1940 near the Red Lion public house in Martlesham. He was a Pioneer serving with the Auxillary Military Pioneer Corps and suffered "multiple injuries consequent on collision with an Eastern Counties Omnibus Company's bus during the blackout" (ex death certificate).
Can anybody point me in the direction of the Coroner's Report for the inquest held on 28th October 1940 or any newspaper report of the accident, please?

your best bet for the newspaper report and it will probably have the coroners report, is the Eastern Daily Press, you can view all the old copies on microfilm and purchase a copy at the Millenium Library Norwich,
As you have a date it should be fairly straight forward.
-
Thanks, I will try that. I presume the only way that I can establish if the Eastern Daily Press carried the story is to visit the library in Norwich? There is no online index? But that would perhaps be expecting too much.

Hi,
Suffolk Record Office should be able to tell you if the Coroner's file has survived and if it is available to view.

Thanks Nanny Jan. I will contact the Suffolk Record Office tomorrow.

The EDP mainly covered the north of Suffolk. A better bet would be the East Anglian Daily Times or the Ipswich Evening Star.

You may like to know that the above was my Grandfather. I did not know him as I was born in 1947. He had a son Geoff and a daughter Irene (my mother). Both are still alive. Geoff lives on the west coast of America and my mother lives near me in Buckinghamshire. She's coming up 92.
Geoff was up with is father when the accident happened.
Granddad got the M.M. in the 1st W.W. taking out a machine gun nest apparently.
He is buried in a Military Cemetery in Norfolk, although I have not been there.
I hope this is of interest.

Thanks Jeff. My late mother-in-law Minnie May Maisie (Coiley) was Montague's niece. Her father was Frederick Coiley. Your mother will probably remember them.
Montague's grave is in Woodbridge Cemetery, Suffolk, not far from where the accident happened. Let me know if you would like to see what I have on the family.

I'm just picking up the Coiley's and saw the postings. My father in law was Montague's brother, Percival Lancet. Any info on the family you can supply would be most welcome. Thank you Seventyplus.

Hi Seventyplus
If you would care to go to www.tribalpages.com/TheDenham Family and ask for an invitation I will be delighted to give you access to my tree which includes everything I have on the Coileys.

Hi LenD
Thanks for that info. Unfortunately, I could find nowhere, including in 'help', to ask for an invitation. Incidentally, the link didn't work so I logged into the site.
You may have gathered that I'm not very computer-literate. If you can help....? seventyplus

Sorry I did not send the link correctly. If you try www.tribalpages.com/denhamfamilytree you should get a page which has a help section at the foot. Then click on 'request an invitation'. If this fails you could e-mail me directly (lendenham@aol.com) and I can then send an invitation to you.
