Title: 6 Skell Bank, Ripon - Refuge for Girls
Post by: purp72 on Saturday 07 September 13 00:29 BST (UK)
Hi there
Is anyone able to assist with a query about an address in Ripon.  I have information from the Children's Society about a great aunt (Ursula (Lily) Dixon) who wrote to them in 1916 from 6 Skell Bank, Ripon.  From a Google search, it looks as if this may have been a  "Refuge for Girls" - if so, does anyone know who ran this refuge, what it did and whether there might be any records still in existence.

Many thanks

Hi,
This does not answer your question but I found Ursula Dixon living in an institution called  Way and Stray House in Meadwood Leeds in the 1911 census.Age 14 born 1897 Ripon Yorkshire.

Thank you for your reply - I did already know that Ursula was in a Waifs and Strays Home in Leeds in 1911 but thanks for your time.  The Waifs and Strays Society became the Children's Society and I am very grateful to the Children's Society for their summary of the file.  I would highly recommend anyone who had an ancestor in a Waifs & Strays home to obtain this - it does take about 6 months and the content can be quite distressing but it really gives an insight into the lives of some the most vulnerable in the days before the Welfare State.  I was not charged for the research service but you are encouraged to make a donation, which I was very happy to do.
