I can find Dora's birth in Hartlepool in 1896.
Alfred Chivers born in Bath Q4 1869. Is that the right one ?
Do you think she married Mr Irvine before or after this ?
Any idea of a date for Helen's birth ?
-
I'm not seeing any marriage for any McLean to an Irvine?
Checked 1885 (when Elizabeth would have been 13!) to 1900.

Can I ask what information you have that Elizabeth married Mr Irvine?
The marriage certificate of her marriage to Alfred will tell you if she was a spinster, or a widow.

There wasn't a census in 1939. ;)
It was the 1939 National Register - initially used to give everyone an Identity Card, and then Ration Books.
Later used by the NHS as their Central Register, and updated by them into the 1990s.
A census was a snapshot of who was where at midnight on a specified date.

Letter home mention Alfred :D

Thank you for the information. The person who I am looking for now is Alfreds daughter Dora Gertrude May Chivers/Jackson.Her husband was on the 1939 register with Alfred, but she was missing with their 2 children,Newby b.1934 and Andrew b.1934.Now that I know it was a register and not a census,I wonder if they were sent away to a safer place?I had thought that the Name Newby would be unusual so easy to trace, thank you for your time,Tom

Have you tried using Dora’s dob 2 5 1896 as per her death in 1982?
Do you know the dob of the sons? It might be that their names are redacted
-
Do you know if the two children you have named have died, if not you should modify your post to remove their names.
I can’t see a birth entry for the second name you give on FreeBMD :-\
There are two Jackson mmn Chivers birth entries in Hartlepool 1934 & 1936.
GRO indexes give the middle name Mclean for birth in 1934
Edit to add
a possible death Sept qtr Hartlepool 1936 for birth Jun qtr Hartlepool 1936
