Title: Bilsdon in 1841 Census
Post by: helenbee on Wednesday 15 June 05 08:56 BST (UK)
I am looking for John Bilsdon in 1841.

In 1851 he is living in Uppingham in Meeting Lane, aged 35. Gives his place of birth as Uppingham so I expect he was there in 1841 too. Am looking for his family members.

Am also looking for any other Bilsdon families in Rutland in 1841, particularly Ayston or Uppingham.

Any help much appreciated as always,

many thanks

Helen

Helen

I can send you the Ayston census as its not very large and badly written so you can decipher it yourself.  Just PM me with your email addy.

As for Uppingham give me a couple of days as its 57 sheets to go through and he is not at the meeting place.

Hi Paul

Thanks for mailing me Ayston census....I found 1 John there but it is not the right one altho' I think they are connected.

Not sure where our John was then in 1841....could have been anywhere I guess tho' don't suppose he strayed too far from Uppingham.

Thanks for your efforts,
Cheers Helen

Think I may be able to help you with this.

I am Aaron Bilsdon, Bath, Somerset. but have traced my family back to uppingham and as I recall to a John Bilsdon. I will post again to confirm details as I have nothing on me here at work at the moment.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the message. If you do have any info on John Bilsdon I would be very grateful. There were 2 John Bilsdons - 1 born in Ayston who appears there in the 1841 census, and our one that was born in Uppingham.

Look forward to hearing from you again,

Best regards
Helen

Hi - I'm not sure if you still need any help with this,  but I think I have found John & Elizabeth in 1841 in Rothwell Northants (wrongly transcribe on An**y) as Bilsam

HO107- 809 Bk 17
Parish Rothwell

So it seems as though they were married by then - this marriage from Free BMD looks possible to me

Marriages Dec 1840

BILSDON  John    Mt Harbor  15 257
CLARKE  Elizabeth     Mt. Harbro  15 257
GOODWIN  Harriet     Mt. Harbro  15 257
HOBBS  Elizabeth     Market Harborough  15 257
Page  George     Mt. Harbro'  15 257
PALMER  William     Mt. Harbro  15 257
Tea  Sarah     Mt. Harbro  15 257
WADDSWORTH  William     Mkt HArbro  15 257

Do you have any of the childrens birth certificates to give you the mother's maiden name?  If not you can still send for the marriage certificate - but only fill out the Grooms details on the aplication,  if it is the right one it will give you both their fathers.

just to confirm we are on the same people.

John Bilsdon (B1816-D1882) Born and died in Uppingham, Rutland
married Elizabeth (B1816 abt) Born in Toddington, Northamptonshire I think.

between them had about 9 children one of whom was Elizabeth born 1848 who had a son out of wedlock called Peter Bilsdon (taken the mothers surname) Born 1864 and he is my great great grandad and his is burried in Bath. I have his birth certificate and he was born as peter bilsdon and mother elizabeth bilsdon in uppingham workhouse and her father is john bilsdon.

I would really like to know his father but think that is probably impossible now.

I do not have the Birth Certificate or any of the 9 children but have been considering it just not got round to it and have only just found time again to start looking back into it.

do you have a public tree online somewhere?

Also I have just taken your lead on a marriagein 1840 and on the same volume / page 15 257 there are two elizabeths registered one in mt.harbo just like the john record (elizabeth clarke) and market harborough (elizabeth hobbs).
Though looking at the original record I can't see where they goot the maiden name from.

Hi awb

Yes I am fairly sure you have your family line back correct through Peter Bilsden (b 1865),  his unmarried mother Elizabeth Bilsden (b 1848) to her parents John & Elizabeth.  I have checked them through the various census years and it all seems to work fine.

I should say though that I am not related,  I just like finding things for people,  so although I do have trees on-line they won't help you.

with the bits that Crowboy found I am starting to get a clue as to what might have happened. - Will be back in a bit

Right,  I have a theory that the Daniel who died in 1823 may have been the father of John born 1816,  at first I thought he would be too young as he was only 25 when he died so born 1798 ish,  but it is possible.

I found a marriage in the IGI

DANIEL BILSDEN
  Spouse:  ELIZABETH CLEAR
Marriage:  06 NOV 1815   Loddington, Leicester

then I found this baptism - also IGI

ANN BILSDEN
 Birth:  20 MAY 1821
Christening:  17 JUN 1821   Wesleyan Methodist, Oakham, Rutland
  Father:  DANIAL BILSDEN
  Mother:  ELIZABETH CLEAR

The Weslyan records are only in the IGI from 1816 - 1837 so it is possible that John's baptism was just before this.

From Crowboy we know that Daniel died in 1823

Then there is the marriage in 1827 of Elizabeth Bilsden widow to John Morris (Kipping?)  he seems to have gone under the name of John Morris.  I believe this is Daniel's widow getting remarried.

I have found John Morris and Elizabeth with two sons Joseph (12) and William (11) in 1841 on  Meeting Lane, Uppingham

I think it looks possible,  if you do get the 1840 marriage certificate for John it will hopefully say that his father is Daniel (deceased) - if not we will know my theory is wrong.

Sadly Elizabeth died in 1850 - buried 29th Jan 1850 in Uppingham aged 59,  so we can't find her in the 1851 census.

I did find her widowed husband John Morris though - still living on Meeting Lane born 1787 London Middlesex,  a Chelsea Pensioner.

John Morris was buried in Uppingham 1st November  1859 aged 72

I am looking for the baptism of Elizabeth Bilsdon nee Clear about 1791. Elizabeth married my ggg grandfather, John Morris, in 1827. They had 3 sons, Joseph, William and Thomas who died in 1840 of scarlet fever. Thanks to DebbieG I have now ordered my ggg grandmother's death certificate in 1850.

I have found Daniel and Elizabeth's daughter, Ann Bilsdon, in 1841. She married William Frisby in 1840 in Uppingham and is living in Wing, Rutland with him in 1841 and also living there is William Bilsdon (recorded as Balsdon) aged 25, Frances Bilsdon aged 45 and Frances Bilsdon aged 15. There's about 3 Ann Frisby deaths recorded in Uppingham in 1844 and 1845 so Ann may have died and possibly William remarried.

Dear Helen,

I could only find 2 John Bilsdons in 1841, one in Ayston, one in Preston. The Preston John is 39 and has a 73yr old John living with him, both Labourers.
The Ayston John, b.1804, is the son of Thomas and Mary.
Your John b.1816 has a son, Daniel, and I'm looking for a Daniel b. abt 1790 so they may be connected. John may have been born to Daniel Bilsdon and Elizabeth Clear (my ggg grandmother) who married in 1815. I've ordered films for their marriage and baptism of their daughter, Ann, b.1821 so hopefully I will find some more Bilsdons soon.
