Title: Translation from French please of possible RC conversion
Post by: Kewtonia on Thursday 05 September 13 11:58 BST (UK)
I have what I think may be a conversion from C of E into the RC Church in 1903, but my French is not brilliant & I'm struggling with the exact wording, if anybody could help that would be brilliant.

Some of the names I know
George Dowle,
Edward Dowle his father, Jeanny (Jane) Popps his mother
Jeanny (Jane) Dowle his sister & Ovide Rocheleau her husband

Roughly ...

On 18 October 1903, I, the undersigned parish curate, by virtue of the power vested in me by Monseigneur F. X(?) Cloutier, Bishop of Trois-Rivieres, have received the declaration of Catholic faith of Georges Dowle, aged 18 years, son of the late Edward Dowle, and of the late Janney(?) Popp(?), have conditionally baptised him, having Ovide Rocheleau as godfather and Jeanney Dowle his wife as godmother, and I have absolved him of all sin and of all censure in the presence of Monsieur L'Abbé Oliver(?) Meunier(?), deacon, and of Monsieur l'Abbé Hector Mareotte(?), assistant, who have signed with me, as also have the godfather and godmother and the said Georges Dowle.

Thank you so much
I was pretty sure, even with my lousy French, what the document was, but to have the details filled in is so helpful.
We knew Jane Popps died in 1902, but didn't know that Edward had died by 1903,
so another little bit of info on the family.

Thanks again

Chris

Well done. I got halfway down and got stuck. I thought the priest absolved him of all heresy, cb

Yeah, it's heresy...presumably of the Protestant variety. Sin would be péché or péchés plural.

clayton bradley, are there any languages you don't have? :)

And yes, it's F. X. Cloutier, 3rd bishop of Trois-Rivieres. He would have been named after Francis Xavier, fairly common. And as a Cloutier he is likely descended from Zacharie Cloutier, one of the very first Quebec settlers...although it is said that every francophone in Quebec has him somewhere in the family tree. Cloutier's daughter married Robert Drouin, a name every genealogist knows :)

Cheers,
China
