Hi,
I am trying to verify the children of John Redding (1776-1854) & Margaret Whitehouse (c1778 - ???) who married in Chesham,Bucks 23/10/1798.
I have the baptism records for Bucks from BFHS for this prd but there are no children recorded for a John & Margaret Redding.
I have traced John & Margaret in the 1841 & 1851 census but they are living on their own,any children, seemingly, have left home & started their own families.
I am fairly certain that one son was a William Redding, born 1805 in Chesham, who married a Mary Rance in 1828,but do not want to add him onto my tree until I am 100% certain of his parentage.
On various sites & family trees there are many children recorded but they all seem to differ from one website to another. Does anyone have verification of who the children actually were or where I could get this from?
Regards

1851 census has numerous Reddings born in Cheshunt in the years just after their marriage.
But these could be children of John and Margaret , or couldbe nephews or another relation.
If you have checked Cheshunt itself for their christenings, then it might be worth trying neighbouring parishes.
Or, of course, they may not havebeen christrened!
Would be worth checking marriages for any that married after 1837 to see what fathers name and occupation is.
I alao cant find a death for Margaret. That could be bring clues - if she dies after John, then informant could well be a child. In fact she may even go to live with a child after John's death.
So that is something to work on.
If people have put children for this couple into their trees, then why not contact them and ask what evidence they have? If they have seen the PR somewhere for the christenings, and can tell you where and when they took place, then you have your info(best to check it out still), but if they havent, and cant provide you with any evidence as to why they think the children are of this couple, then just forget about them.

I thought this query was about Chesham (Bucks) not Cheshunt (Herts?) HB

It is !!!
Just realised my typing errors , I somehow got the wrong word in my mind as I typed it, place I mean is Chesham
So- in previous post every time I have typed Cheshunt, please read Chesham!

Hi
Have you tried Family Search, there are at least 7 children born to a John & Margaret Redding in Chesham for the time period you are looking at albeit the spelling of the name differs between Reading & Redding. ::)
Try just putting Redding Buckinghamshire in the search box with parents John & Margaret, you should get them all. :)
For example, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JSC2-L57
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for all your responses, will try all new avenues & hopefully will be able to confirm or eliminate some of the children.

Are you still looking for the children of John Redding and Margaret Whitehouse?
I have only just seen your post. I am descended from their son George and a few years back had the pleasure of meeting a descendant of John William. If you are still interested I will look out the info. I have drawers full of papers which I have just started to go through to transfer onto my family tree.

Hi,
Thank you for for your interest. After extensive research I now believe that the John Redding (1776-1843) I previously thought had married Margaret Whitehouse actually married Mary Franklin.
I am a descendant of John's youngest full brother,Joseph Redding (1784-1858),who married Elizabeth Butler. Their parents were Joseph Redding and Elizabeth Puddephatt.
I am now trying to establish the parentage of Joseph Redding snr (1751-1825).
I'm sure there must still be a family connection with the John Redding who married Margaret Whitehouse - I just haven't found it yet!
Any info you have on the Redding family will be gratefully received.

There are lots of Puddephats around Chesham. Have you gone down that branch yet?

Hi Coreen,
Actually there were 2 John Reading/Reddings at that time.
The John Redding who married Mary Franklin lived up at Hawridge which is out of Chesham and up the hill (Chilterns).
I have come across a couple of folk who have tried to what I might describe as "highjack" our John Reading by avowing he married Mary, however, there are several hundred ( no exaggeration) of folk descended from Joseph Redding and Elizabeth Puddephatt who accept John married Margaret.
John adopted the spelling Reading which this branch of the family has firmly adhered to ever since, whereas what seems like the majority preferred Redding.
My great grandfather (grandson of John & Margaret Reading) left Chesham for London as a young man and the family eventually emigrated to NZ, Australia & Canada. A few years ago I moved back to the UK and am now living 20 minutes away from Chesham and have a better appreciation of the geography involved.
There are very extensive pedigrees for Reading & Puddephatt and various maternal lines on Ancestry which are being researched to ensure legitimacy. As I am sure you are aware, there is a lunatic fringe who tag on any likely individual. I have even found children with birth dates preceding their parents' dates.
Good luck

Hi,
I deduced that the John Redding who was the son of Joseph Redding & Elizabeth Puddephatt must have been the same John Redding who married Mary Franklin after studying the BFHS burial records.
The John who married Margaret died in Chesham,Bucks in March 1854 ,aged 84,making his year of birth about 1769. John's mother,Elizabeth Puddephatt was born 30/01/1756, so she would have only been aged about thirteen & unmarried if she had given birth to John Redding in 1769. Not impossible but unlikely.
Another John Redding was christened 16/04/1769 in Chesham,Bucks & his parents were William & Mary Redding. I think that this is the John Redding who married Margaret Whitehouse.
