Hello - I trying to find out more about my husband's great uncle who emigrated to Australia. I would like to make contact with the British Ex Services Club in Sydney as I have found the following newspaper article and it says he was a founder and life member. My hope would be they have some information/photos of him. Is anyone a member or can anyone put me in contact with a member? Many thanks for any help. Regards Sue Garside

Hi Sue, It appears they don't have a website and email address, but their address is:
British Ex Services ClubAddress: 44 Market St, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000
I worked in the Club Industry in Sydney for many years and don't recollect ever being to the club, but do remember it was not at the address it now has. So it may have moved due to falling numbers as many of the Ex services have done.
If you Google your Great Uncles name there is an article on Trove about a man with the same unusual name in 1940 near Sydney and a near drowning? As it is not a common name I would assume it was about him. Further to this there are a couple of sites one being the national Archives with some photo's of Office bearers so may be something there.
Cheers Neil

Thanks Neil I've already looked at the Trove article and I bet this is him! I will write to the Ex Services Club - perhaps someone else will read this and know someone who knew him!!
I will also follow up the National archives photos too. Many thanks for your help.
Regards
Sue

Hello Sue, OH and I remember fondly the British ex Services Club, which was on the corner of York and Market Streets, in the city. You went down stairs and the club was in the basement of a high rise building. We used to go there back in the late 1980's when we both worked in the city.
The Club is listed at 44 Market Street however when I rang the phone number, it came up unlisted.
British ex servicemen, I think, still participate in our ANZAC Day march. Just a suggestion, maybe contact the Head Office of the RSL (Returned & Services League of Australia) www.rsl.org.au/Contact-Us
maybe they could assist.
Good Luck

Hi Sue
Did you want any more information about him?
I see him on electoral rolls from 1930 -1980 in NSW and another entry for the same name in Qld in 1925, also a probable marriage in 1929. Happy to transcribe but thought you may already have the info.
Judith

Thanks for replies Bonnie and Judith - I will follow up your suggestions.
I do have the information from the electoral rolls thank you but there are a couple of things I don't know and if you can find any answers to these I would be most grateful:
I believe his first wife Doris Clara Winifred (nee Cullis) died in 1972 - can you confirm this?
He married again (I can see that from the newspaper article) to an Amy. Amy who? and when did this marriage take place?
Is there a death for her?
I have tried to see if he had any children with Doris but the birth records I can access don't help.
Thanks for your time and help - it is most appreciated. Regards Sue
-
Judith - I've just noticed you are researching people from Somerset. I live there so if there is anything I can do in return please ask.
Regards
Sue

Bonnie, do you remember a lady that worked there named Sue?
Kind of short but really bubbly? I’m trying to find her or anyone that knows her

Hi SamanthaJaneX and welcome to RootsChat.
Sorry, don't remember any of the staff who worked at the Club ... it was so long ago since hubby and I used to pop in for an after work drink, usually on a Friday night ...
Good luck with your search.
