Does anyone have any advice on how to trace family born in Germany and then came to live in England.
I am looking for parents to a John Christian Loffhogen/Loffhogan born about 1837 in Bremen, Hanover, Germany. From his wedding bann his father is Hans Loffhogen/loffhogan and he was a goldsmith by trade. I have looked at passenger lists without much luck, and wondered if there was a Geman listing for births, marriages and deaths etc. or if there is a website to research from.
Obviously there is not much to go on from where I have been able to get to - I have no idea when they came to England.
Any one have any ideas on how to move forward?

There is the Anglo German Family History Society http://www.agfhs.org.uk/

I found the marriage bans in 1863, which record the father of John Christian as 'Hants' Loffhogan
Can't find anyone called Loffhogan on any census records or travel listings either.

The name seems to be Loffhagen. The first census he appears on is 1871 & after that he's calling himself Myers although the children were all Christened Loffhagen & married under that name.
IGI has over 37m. German birth records but there are only 2 Loffhagens.
It looks like Stan's link is the way to go.

You could try searching the online national archives catalogue to see if he became a naturalised British citizen
