RFA PETRONOL was Royal Fleet Auxciliary not HMS and as such would have beeen classified as a Merchant Ship for the purposes of her Crew Agreements.
It depends when your Grandfather served.
Her Crew Agreements from 1918 until 1938 are stored in The MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND with the exception of years ending with "5" which will be in the NMM GREENWICH
Crew agreements for 1939-1950 are stored in TNA Kew.
Search via Official number 142453
If he saw service during the war years there is a possibilty he served under T124 articles. These maybe at Kew.
