HI
I am trying to find a Agnes McGhee born c1878 - parents John McGhee and Martha Anderson - I think that she was born in port glasgow.
this is according to her Marriage cert. 13/3/1899 to william Docherty however on the 1881 census it looks like her father and mother are not married. and are living with marthas parents. could this mean that she was out of wedlock when she was born,? can any one advise - please and thank you.

Hi Tracey,
I've had a quick look on Scotlands People and cannot find a marriage between a John McGhee/Mcgee/ McGhie to a Martha Anderson during the years 1877-1879.
Where were the couple staying on 1881 Census and is Agnes with them?
Om Agnes's marriage certificate is Martha recorded as Martha McGhee nee Anderson or just Martha Amderson?
Looby :)

Hi Tracey,
There is an Agnes McGhee born in Port Glasgow during 1877. I found this on Scotlands People website.
I couldn't find a marriage between Martha Anderson and John McGhee - That's not to say there wasn't one but with the spellings I was using there was no matches. However there is a woman called Martha McGhee with another name Anderson died in Port Glasgow in 1909 at the age of 62 - this means she was born approx.1847 and would have been 30 when she gave birth to Agnes ???
Your best bet would be to purchase 30 credits with Scotlands People -cost £7- and view the birth registration of Agnes McGhee (this would use 6 of your credits). This should tell you if the parents were married and if so the date and place of their marriage should be recorded.
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
The info I found for you did not cost me anything as searching for info is free only looking at the results costs credits!
Looby :)

Hi Tracey
According to the 1881 census, Martha Anderson and John McGhee were both born in Ireland
and as there are two sons on there aged 14 and 16 both born in Ireland
I think it most likely that John and Martha were married in Ireland,
they are living with Martha's parents Robert and Agnes Anderson
who were also born in Ireland,Robert being the head of the house probably put his daughters name down as her maiden name,
I cant find them on the 1871 census in Port Glasgow so possible that the whole family came over together some time after 1871

A marriage between John Magee and Martha Anderson was registered in Coleraine, Co Derry in 1864, Vol 6, page 503. That looks fairly promising.

I can add a bit more to that-
Coleraine Chronicle, 7 May 1864: At the Registrar's Office, Coleraine, on the 30th ult., Mr. John McGee, to Martha Jane, eldest daughter of Mr. Robert Anderson, both of Coleraine.
There's another Martha Jane Anderson who married in Coleraine district in same quarter (2 Apr.1864 to a William Wallace) but not the same person/Anderson family.
