Title: Hannah Hambling born Beccles 1796-Help please!
Post by: Duodecem on Thursday 29 August 13 14:57 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help me with finding what became of Hannah Hambling. She was born in Beccles 30 December 1796, baptised on 2nd January 1797, the daughter of Jonathan James Hambling and Lydia Eggett of Yarmouth, both of whom were widowed when they married in Beccles in 1794.
Hannah had an illegitimate son, William George Hambling in Beccles in 1818, (he later moved to Yarmouth, married and worked for the Trinity Service).
There is no further record of Hannah. I don't know if she married or died after William's birth. There are no census records of her and none of the Beccles records are available online, as far as I know.
I wonder if anyone has any ideas as to where I could look next.

A Hannah Hambling born c1805 Beccles, according to the 1851  census, in Yarmouth, married a John Goss in Gorleston in 1833. Could this be her?
Her husband was younger than her, so maybe she knocked a few years off. ;D

Yes that does seem possible. I looked on Ancestry and found that in 1841 an Eliza Hambling a weaver born about 1826 was also living with the family. By 1861 Hannah's dob is 1801-and her probable date of death is 1862.
But -among her many siblings(her father married 3 times) there is no Eliza. If she was Hannah's child as well it doesn't make Hannah much of a catch- nearly 10 years older than John Goss with 2 illegitimate children in tow.She must have had some other redeeming features!
Is there any more information about the marriage-could the Hannah that married John Goss have been a widow.?

The marriage is on the Suffolk Marriage Index and it usually states whether widowed and in this case it looks like they are both single.

Thank you Sue that certainly seems a possible marriage for Hannah. I suppose if I could  eliminate any other potential Hannah Hamblings born in Beccles it would make it more certain.
Most of my research has been in Norfolk which has been lucky as there are a number of free to access records which I've been able to use.
I tried googling the Suffolk Marriage Index and came up with the Joiner Marriage Index which didn't have any matches for my search. Cuold you send me a link please and also recommend any way of accessing records for the Beccles/Gorleston area?
I do owe you a great deal of thanks. When i first started blundering about looking for family records this link on Google answered a lot of questions and introduced me to Rootschat.

There is a marriage of an Eliza Hambling to a Richard Gee in Yarmouth in 1844, fathers name Noah Hambling, innkeeper. 1851 census says Eliza born Great Grimsby c1826
witnesses were Sarah Ann Hambling and Robert Bullimore    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12309-11063-7?cc=1416598&wc=MMVP-CM4:n994525104

Freereg have the marriage of Eliza, also a baptism in the right year-1826 in Ormesby St Margaret to Noah and Anne Hamblyn (sic). I'm not sure what the connection to Hannah Hambling of Beccles could be-a cousin perhaps, but it seems unlikely to be her daughter.

Hi
I have the CD of BDM's for St Michaels Beccles
Births 1586-1865
Burials 1586-1833
Marriages 1586-1900

If you need anything checking - I'm willing to have a look for you. It's quite an old CD - printed 2005 - I don't know if it has been updated.

I didn't find all of my 'Beccles lot' on it, but found quite a few.

Thank you Jay that could be very useful. I know that the record for"my" Hannah Hambling is correct.  Would it be possible to see if there are another Hannah Hambling born between 1800-1805?
If there isn't another Hannah it's likely that suffolk*sue is right and "my" Hannah married John Goss and lopped a few years off her age in the process.
I suppose that pre bmd registration you could easily alter your age -and, of course it's probable that some people didn't know their exact age. With large families it would be very easy to lose track especially if the mother died.
Thank you again for the offer Jay, Jan.

Thank you Jay. It looks as if Sue is right and the Hannah Hambling who married John Goss is the same one as the mother of William George. I'm so glad. It must have been a lonely time being the mother of an illegitimate child in 1818, especially as her mother had died and her father remarried. I'm glad she married and didn't die alone and in poverty.
Eliza Hambling on the 1841 census is still a bit of a mystery, none of Hannah's sibling were called Noah. I will have to investigate further and see if there is a connection. Many thanks to both of you for your help. Jan

Hi Teresa

I have Blowers in my family tree - marriages through the Calver and Tooke families from Beccles and Lowestoft.

My first name is Jay - which is quite a coincidence.

I don't know how much I can help with the details you are looking for.  I'll have a look around and see if I can find any further snippets of info.

The National Archives have the will of Isaac Blowers - Gentleman - of Beccles dated 30th Dec 1819. Is that the one you are looking for. It can be downloaded direct from there website for £3.30.

Ancestry have the baptism and burial of Thomas Blowers Jay -then another baptism on 19 May 1818 -also Thomas Blowers Jay, parents Thomas and Sarah Jay.
It looks as though this may be the Thomas you are descended from, Teresa.
On the subject of Hannah Hambling -with your help Jay I was able to establish that she did marry John Goss, lived in Great Yarmouth, had 2 more children and died at the age of 65.
On the subject of Eliza Hambling-I also discovered that Hannah had an uncle named Noah. He couldn't have been the father of Eliza since he died in 1808-but Hannah also had 13 siblings/half siblings (her father outlived 2 wives and had a further 7 children by wife number 3!) It seems likely that one of them used the family name Noah -making Hannah Eliza's aunt.

My mother’s maiden name was Hambling. I have Hannah Hambling and William George Hambling in my tree. Many Hamblings joined Trinity House. My grandfather who was Arthur Frederick Hambling, he became a lighthouse Keeper. William George is my great great grandfather.
