Hi
I am trying to find out when a family returned to the uk and if all of them came back.
Leonard burrows king born 1869 Sussex died 1927 Southampton
Served as a warrant officer ordnance department southern army Poona India. He married Martha Jane rennin ? Whilst in Poona ? Was she from Poona ? They had 3 children Cyril born 1902 died 1903 Stella born Yemen 1903 died 1946 Cecil Edwin George born Poona 1906 died 1938 London. Martha died in India in 1909 and it looks like Leonard remarried to Georgian Marlene ? Or different spelling Georgia Malone. I am told they all moved back to the uk when Stella was a teenager so approx. I can't find any details of the travel. I was told they may have also brought several servants back with them and initially they may have lived in Brighton where Leonard was born. I can't find travel details and what happened to Georgia Malone? I have found a grave for Leonard which states late of the ordnance dept Indian army and Cecil and Stella are on the same plot. Can anyone help with the journey from India to UK ?

hi sorry for my earlier post I was looking at rennie when should have used Everett but have found this birth mary j Everett reg dist guitcross Norfolk eng 1866 jul sep vol 4b p222 also on the marriage cider posted it says she was married as mary jane Everett not rennie ! page 77 place Bombay so you canget the cert from gro as normal if you wish comes under gro army births deaths and marriages also tried a search through army birth records but nothing comes up and nothing in outgoing passenger lists for a Martha Everett so must have gone prior to 1890 I,m guessing she was a dau of another soldier .

Martha Jane was born to Robert and Mary Rennie I have re -read cider drinkers post and it looks like he has found the correct records for her 1871 Ahmedabad Bombay. Robert and
Mary were listed as her parents on her previous marriage details. she managed to marry 3 times in her short life. I have never found the Bombay birth details before so thank you cider drinker.
I have now found a possible return to England details April 1912 on the matiana but it gives no first names and the children's ages are slightly out, but I gather that this is common so it could e the correct details. Will carry on trawling. Guess I now need to find out if Robert and Mary were born in Bombay or were they in fact British?

Good Morning
Sorry not to get back to you sooner but I'm on a library computer and I only get so much time before it clicks off.
Anyway still no luck on passenger records for the trip home.He was still in India Jan 1912 when the Indian Army Quarterly has a Leonard Burrows King born 9.8.1869 rank as of 25.6.1911 working at the Ordnance Depot Poona Store in the Southern Army.Warrant Officer.
If you have his army record it should say when he left the army.
There is a Will for him proven London 21.4.1927 .Leonard Burrows King of Saunton 62 Wilton Avenue died 18.3.1827.Exec Ernest Prescott and Stella Marjorie King £112 5s 11d.if you order a copy it should mention Georgina but I like you can't find a burial record that fits.
Robert John Rennie and his wife Mary had the following children.
Alexander and William Henry Rennie born 30.9.1852 baptised 5.11.1852 Deesa Bombay(twins)
Thomas William 23.11.1860/bapt 24.11 1860 Deesa married Sonapore Bombay 4.6.1882 Grace Ellen Reid d of John age 19
Mary Ann Charlotte born 1864 married 31.10.1882 Bycutta Bombay Hugh Alford Lafond age 22 s of Alexander Noble Lafond.
Catherine born 22.10.1866 bapt 25.10.1866 Kirkee Bombay
Martha Jane born 1871
Robert John buried 29.3.1876 Kirkee Bombay.Died the day before aged 0
Alice Louise married 3.6.1897 Bombay Cecil Lewis Chitto s of William.
And possibly Edith Marjorie born 1899 married 4.10.1916 St James Congelton Cheshre d of Robert John Rennie to Lancelot Heygate age 28 son of Ambrose who she divorced before marring at Delhi 10.10.1932 Arthur Cyril Vining born 1889 s of Charles Edward Vining.
Bit unsure of her because she is born so late.
For British Indian families you could try FIBIS website they have a database of information to search for free.
Can't find anything for the King family myself but you never know.
Will have a look see if I can find more

Many thanks for all your help I haven't got Leonard's army records where do I get them from? I did see the probate details for Leonard how do I order a copy of the full obituary? Haven't been doing this very long so appreciate all the help. I have managed to trace a living relative that I never knew about and have very much enjoyed meeting her. The research is becoming very addictive!

hooray I have found details of Leonard leaving Indian army release date 10/3/1914 need to search for travel back to uk after this date now. so nice when you finally find something. still interested to find out if Martha Jane rennie a parents were born in Indian. Also if Georgian Morlene came back to uk will leonard and children. the incoming I found was 1912 so I can exclude that now.
-
Great to hear.Lovely when you find something.
The full Will costs £6 you can either order it in person from your local Probate Office and they send it you through the post or you can order it by post from the office in Leeds.
Postal Searches and Copies Department
Leeds District Probate Registry
York House,
York Place,
Leeds
LS1 2BA
You should include a copy of Form PA1S from their website at justice.gov.uk but if you provide the full name ,date ,probate office (ie .London) and his address which I've already given you ,you should be ok.Make the cheque payable to HM Courts and Tribunal Service.
Hope you find everything you're looking for.

just thought I would post an update. I have at last received Leonard's will which states previous will to be null and void. his will was written one year before his death and does not mention his second wife only his children. I have also now found his second wife she died two years after Leonard in park prewitt mental hospital. I wonder if she was admitted around the time of his will or if they divorced at some stage. I guess back in the 1920's mental illness was something not talked about. her name was Georgina nee Malone. the people named in her probate served with Leonard in the Ordanance dept of the Indian army. where do I go about looking for divorce records? Think I might send for Georgina's will as she brought the children up from very young, would be interesting to see if she mentions them in her will.

Hi
there is info on the National Archives site here
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/divorce.htm
I had a look but there wasn't anything.
Unless you need a copy of any decree absolute for legal purposes, I wouldn't recommend making an application to HMCTS at Holborn. The charge is £60 for a 10 year search, and if there is a divorce, all you'll get is an a4 piece of paper with the couples names, date & place of marriage and the date of the decree nisi. You won't get any case notes.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I notice on the probate it states she is a widow so I am assuming by this it means she was not divorced. Going to sent for copy of her will to see if she left step children anything. She would have had no other family here as far as I am aware.

I spent about 6 months tracing my family tree several years ago, and took a long break. I'm looking to get back into it.
I'd be very interested hearing from you as Leonard Burrows King is my Great Grandfather - his daughter Stella Marjorie King was my Grandmother on fathers side (married Robert McDonald).
-
Hi Leonard burrows King is my great grandfather as well. I am descendant from his son Cecil. I met Cecily a few years back, she was named after him.
-
Out of interest do you have any photographs of Leonard?
-
L B King married my great-grandmother Georgina Malone, who was known to my father and his siblings as Grandma King. As far as I know her maiden name was Pickett. She married my GGF Martin Malone (Royal Engineers) at Aldershot in 1869. He was posted to Poona (Pune) before 1872, when their first child, Frances, was born. Five further siblings followed. Martin Malone died at Aden in 1884 from heat apoplexy leaving Georgina to raise six children. The evidence points to her having been born in 1848 at Vauxhall, London, ten minutes before a twin sister, Sarah. Thus the age given on her marriage record, 45, to LBK is false, as is the age on her death certificate, from 1930. That is why it took me so long to find it! I did get what records I could from Park Prewett mental hospital but they told me little about any circumstances as to how she came to be there. I did check passenger lists for date of entry to UK but drew a blank. Unfortunately, I have photo's for neither Leonard (my father was named after him) or Georgina. Does anyone else on this post?
If you have any questions or further information about what I have written, please do get in touch.
-
For 'London Boy'. I would very much like to contact you regarding what I wrote at the end of page three. We are distantly related by the marriage of LBK and my great grandmother Georgina Malone. I have a story about Stella that might be of interest to you.
