Title: Hi, Can Anyone help please -- Alcock's
Post by: becksxx on Tuesday 27 August 13 20:22 BST (UK)
Hi, if anyone can help I would appreciate it immensely - seem to have hit a big Brick Wall..

My 2 x GGrandfather William Alcock was born 5th December 1871 on Birth certificate just gives the mothers name as Mary Alcock and living at Flower and Dean Street, she being a comb seller. There is no fathers name apparently.

I have found a baptism on 31st December where it read William was the son of William and Mary living at 34 Flower and Dean Street and William is shown as a Labourer.

William Jr went on to Marry Rose Ann Addlesea Ward in 1899 and later shown on the census as living in Lincoln with his wife and children , However I can find no information between him being born and married - nor can I trace his parentage at all .. Very frustrating ..

I have seen snippets of census but nothing complete that seems to add up or give me any further info , I have been told there may be info on the British newspaper archive however I don't have access :-(

Any help would be very much appreciated ... Spent hours trawling online !!

Many Thanks

Becky ;)

Hi Becky

What newsworthy event may have occurred for there to be a newspaper article?

If you enter William Alcock into the newspaper archive on FindMyPast you get 1045 hits!

I think we may need more info (Places, dates eg) to find which entry you think may be 'your' chap.

Hi thanks for your replies, all I know was that he was supposedly mentioned in the newspaper because of some petty crime when he was aged about 10 I think so will have been about 1881??? - its hearsay ... he lived at the time on Flower and Dean Street, which I gather was rather a notorious place, I have tried searching to no avail so far.

Thanks

Becky.

I can find no information between him being born and married

That's probably because he was serving in the army (Lincolnshire Regiment). If you purchase a few credits at Find My Past you can download his service record (12 pages).

I think it will be worth your while. Apart from his military service and pension details, the record makes reference to his siblings, and provides details of his marriage and his death ;)

Hi Becky

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are but check out your local library to see if the offer in-house access to Ancestry Library Edition, and a growing number subscribe to Find My Past so you don't have to.

He joined the Army (Lincs reg) in 1887 aged 14,and stayed there for 21 years-hence why he doesn't appear on any early censuses.

He had a younger brother called George who joined the Beds Reg.
Also another brother and a sister, neither are named.

Wife Rose Ann Ward (12th Sep 1899) and kids b Lincoln....
Rose Mary 7/8/1901
Edith Annie 4/4/05
George Edward 23/8/07

He died on 28th Dec 1943 in Halifax of a cerebral haemorhage.

Deaths Dec 1943

You say that the birth cert has no fathers name apparently, does that mean that you haven't actually seen it yourself?

Do you have his marriage cert, does that name his father, who are the witnesses?

Carol Thanks For the above
My mother has the birth certificate and has been researching for years to no avail, however stopped quite some time ago - she said I am sure that the fathers name was missing hense trying to find his service records,
I will be in contact with her to dig it out ...
I live in Yorkshire and was unaware that you could access Find my Past at a local library so will have to have a trip down to see the images, as i Have ran out of credits !!!!

Again Many Many Thanks for the above

Becky

He had a younger brother called George who joined the Beds Reg

Picking up from the army record, the brother George Alcock lived in Bedfordshire. There was also a sister Mary (aka Polly). Both children were in the care of the Stepney Poor Law Union. They were boarded out by the union from 16 May 1884 onwards to three successive foster carers in Bedfordshire. They were then sent into service, in 1891 and 1893 respectively (Mary to Grantham, Lincolnshire).

(source: LMA, STBG/L/146, via Ancestry > London, England, Poor Law and Board of Guardian Records, 1430-1930 > Tower Hamlets > Stepney > Register of Children > Register Of Children Boarded Out, 1876-1889, pp. 81-2, and 1882-1908, pp. 19-20)

I did not find William in the above poor law records. It is worth noting that when he attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1887 he was in Dublin.

George and Mary are found as follows:

1891 census
RG12/1260 folio 106 page 43
Green End, Maulden, Bedfordshire
Eliza Hickson, Head, Widow, 60, born Maulden Beds
George Allcock, Boarder, 14, born London
Polly Allcock, Boarder, 10, born London

Alfred Robinson, Boarder, 13, born London

George is found  in Luton in 1901 (again with Alfred Robinson)

1901 census
RG13/1518 folio 117 page 30
19 Boyle Street, Luton
Thomas Osborne, Head, married, 38, Straw Plait Dyer, born Beds Totternhoe
Jane Osborne, Wife, married, 31, born Beds Eaton Bray
[3 children, born Luton]
Alfred Robinson, Boarder, single, 23, Plait Dyer(?), born London
George Alcock, Boarder, single, 24, Straw Plait Dyer, born London

Perhaps you can take them further from there?

As there is no father named on William's birth certificate, it's possible that the father's name on the baptism record was an invention, for respectability's sake.

Well found Bookbox.

I did look at that Bedfordshire George, but wasn't 100% sure so discounted him for a while.
I'm always amazed when people manage to find anything in the poor law records,as they are so time consuming to trawl through.

Been looking to see what happened to Mary (Polly) b 1881 ish ,but having no luck.

Wow Bookbox that is amazing many thanks - I have found them on Ancestry to look at now although how you found them initially is unbelievable I wouldn't know where to start ??

Carol,  I cant find what happened to Polly afterwards either but will carry on I will try and dig out the birth Certificate for William Junior - I have got his marriage Cert and it States on there that his father was indeed William George Alcock a Labourer (not shown deceased) although spouse father shown deceased so possibly still Alive ?? But I am thinking seems more likely to be a made up name to save face like you said ? Cant find the christening records for Polly or George either but will persevere

Again Tonnes of thanks

Becky
