Title: COMPLETED THANKS
Post by: JOOBLES on Tuesday 27 August 13 16:25 BST (UK)
On the 1871 census I'm looking for George Shoebridge (Shoobridge) who was born in Tenterden, Kent in early 1857. So he would be aged 13/14.

I have him on the 1861 census (aged 4) with his parents, William & Catherine, living in Headcorn Road, Smarden.

I also have him in 1881 with his own family living in Westwell, Kent.

I did a phonetic surname search in case it was mis-spelt but with no luck.

Any ideas anyone ??

Thanks

Thanks ever so much Lostris ... well done !!

Why on earth would they use the name Hatch ??  ;D

It certainly appears to be them - there are too many similarities to be a different family!

Probably a simple case of the enumerator recording the wrong surname when he made up his book.

Yes I suppose so.

If they only knew the problems they would later cause for future family historians with their sometimes awful handwriting and other mistakes !!!  ;D ;D

Good afternoon

I hope that you don't mind me contacting you, I came across your post regarding William and Catherine Shoebridge and was very interested in it because my own family is also mystified as to why William and Catherine changed their name from Shoebridge to Hatch as we are also descended from them with our surname being Hatch, we come via their son Charles. I have often wondered whether William was illegitimate and decided to change his name on finding his real father or mother's name or whether they decided to change their name once in Westwell for some reason as the Hatch name appears to be frequently used in Westwell. My mother and I visited Canterbury record office a few years ago and couldn't find an entry for the birth of William but his marriage certificate of 1839 states that William's father is Thomas Murrell? I wondered whether you have any more information regarding William's father? There is a Shoebridge Hatch marriage in 1788 in Biddenden between a Robert Hatch and a Jane Shoebridge and I have occasionally attempted to look for a connection, they had a daughter called Mary who seems to have had a rough time of things and i wondered whether either they or Mary may have had other children which would provide a link to William. any way it was nice to come across someone investigating mutual ancestors!

kind regards

Hi new relative !!

I can't work that one out either  ???

They baptised some of their children twice - under both surnames.

I know Catherine's maiden name was Hart but I don't yet have the marriage cert. for her and William. I didn't know William's father was Thomas Murrell ! William was born circa 1818 in Cranbrook, Kent

Their son, Charles was born 1845/46 in Benenden. We come down from their son, George, it's from his birth cert. that I know Catherine's maiden name was Hart.  George was born 1857 in Tenterden and kept the surname Shoebridge even though your Charles didn't.

I'll dig out my papers and get back to you shortly.
