I'm really confused. I've hit a brick wall.
My great, great (or how many other greats) was Samuel Moffat (born 1849 in Ireland and moved to Congleton). He married Ellen Davenport (born 1849 in Bradwell, Cheshire).
I believe the parents are James and Jane but I have no other information. I don't have a maiden name for Jane - and James I'm clueless about James as it doesn't appear he came over to England. He might have died or something? Can someone help me ...
I really appreciate your help :)
Thanks
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
To begin with the birth certificate of any of the children born in Congleton would give you Jane's maiden name.
I'll carry on looking now :)

Hi,
This would appear to be the Moffat family on the 1851 (transcribed as Maffit) -
James Maffit 45 Gen Lab
Jane Maffit 35
John Maffit 17
Mary Maffit 14
Hugh Maffit 12
Rebecca Maffit 10
James Maffit 6
Samuel Maffit 3
James Beady 45
John Duff 20
Charles O'hara 18
Michael Tansey 18
Robert Nevins 25
John Bruman 22
Charles Hughes 13
All born in Ireland

On the 1861 census Jane is recorded as married, however on the 1871 she is a widow.
Death of James -

Hi JJ
I am so sorry - it took me so long to type up and your message re the marriage was flagged up in red when I began typing. I didn't read past that!
I'll remove it!

Thanks everyone, that's a really great help. Funnily enough I stumbled across the Maffits and discounted it ... I didn't know who a lot of the people were (with different surnames). Am I right to assume that James died in Ireland and didn't make it over to England. Will his death be registered under the name of Maffits or would it be as Moffatt?
Thanks
Lisa :)

Oh, he died in Congleton? How do I go about finding his father? Will his father be listed as Maffits in Ireland?
Sorry, am new to all this - is really difficult! x

Hi Lisa,
the 'Maffitt' is a transcription error.
The death in Congleton looks very likely. It was registered when ages were not given so you would have to get the certificate to check. It would not give any other details than cause of death, occupation, abode and the person who registered the death.
You can apply here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
JJen has given you the reference.
If you also get a birth certificate for a child born in Congleton, that will give you Jane's maiden name.
Irish records did not begin until 1864 for births. There are non-Catholic marriage indexes from 1845 but James and Jane were married before that.
With the combination of two surnames, there is a slim chance that you could go further with your research but it would be difficult. You would be looking to Parish Records in Ireland and you would therefore need more specific information e.g. area and religious denomination. However, it would be good to have Jane's name also.
The GRO site has the forms for birth enquiries also.

There is a possibility here for James in 1861 2613 / 140 / 20
James Moffatt 47 yrs is a married lodger with the Barnard family in Betchton, Cheshire - Congleton district.
He is an agricultural labourer.
The age is out but that is not unusual it often happens.
