Dear Friends,
I am seeking advice on where I might find any information on above school. More precisely a headmaster called William Cockerill.
Any help most welcome.
Thank you.
Peter

Hi
Does the school still exist today? Is it known by the same name?
When and where was William Cockerill born?
-
Hi Carole,
William Thomas Cockerill was born 13th April 1859 at North Frodingham Yorkshire.
I have a reference to the fact he was 'Headmaster of Holy Trinity school in Vauxhall'. I am guessing this is Holy Trinity School Vauxhall Bridge Road. I do not know if this school still exists today.
Thank you for your interest.
Best wishes,
Peter

Presumably you found reference to him on this Site, Peter?

Was he a relative?
Romilly.

The 1901 census shows as follows - all b Lambeth except William
Elmhurst Street - Frodingham (name of house) Clapham
William Cockerill 41 - schoolmaster to church school b Frodingham Yorks
Lily 35
Daisy 18
Gerald 8
Edith Waterworth 18 - visitor - pupil teacher b Battersea

They were in London so I have asked the moderator to move this to the London & Middlesex board

1891 shows him as a schoolmaster living in Lambeth - only child at that time was Daisy

Dear Carole and Romilly
Thank you both for your help. Yes I am great grandson of William. I was hoping there might be some school records and pictures from his time as headmaster in an archive perhaps somewhere in Lambeth - any ideas?
I did have the Bellringer link but thank you none the less for hunting it down.
Best wishes,
Peter

He was married twice
1881 shows him single and in lodgings
In 1882 he married Caroline Walker Tilt - she died 1885
In 1888 he married Susan Elizabeth Tilt - his sister in law but the marriage cert shows him as a bachelor - not widower
-
Ty Carole,
Yes his first wife died shortly after giving birth to a son Charles who died a few months later. William is buried at Brompton Cem. with both his wives and first child Charles.
Best wishes,
Peter

I'm not sure about this but I believe that in 1888 is was still illegal for a man to marry his deceased wife's sister. The law was changed in the early 1900's.
Perhaps that's why he declared himself a bachelor, not a widower.

Hi Peter,
I think that Ancestry has some London School Records for the period that you're interested in, - but I don't have current access to that Site.
I've had a look at Find my Past for you, but they only seem to have School Records for Manchester.
Hopefully someone with access will be able to help you further.
Romilly.

Many thanks Romilly for your help.

Another thought Peter...
You could contact:
'The Ancient Society of College Youths', to see what records (if any) they hold on your ancestor. He was Secretary of the Society from 1892—1937, - and should at least feature in minutes of meetings, etc.
Romilly.

Thanks Romilly. They have offered to allow me access to their archives - another task to do!!!
Best wishes,
Peter

Try
"Aim25" website, click Education.
Under Education Officer's Department -Division 8, a Holy Trinity C of. E School is listed. If the school log books have been deposited, other papers may have too. You can often get a pretty good insight into character of the Head through the entries they make in the log books.
Hope this is the correct school and that you can find what you are looking for.

Dear Student,
