Does anyone recognise the name of an RAF station called Evere? I have looked on lists of former RAF stations and can see nothing that looks anything like this entry (it was in the UK):
-
BRUSSELS/EVERE
Just pop the name into TNA Discovery catalogue and limit to AIR series
This is the RAF Station ORB for the period
AIR 28/62

Thanks again Ross. I must remember to look in Discovery before looking elsewhere.
So, Evere was in Brussels! That's a little strange. My father was classified HE from Italy in April 1945 and was posted to Croydon (May '45). The Evere posting was in December and then back to Croydon in Feb '46. So, you were HE.... except you weren't if they wanted you back again.... ::)

Evere is a suburb if outer Brussels and is where NATO has its HQ. The international airport is co located with the Belgian Air Force airbase at Evere; the latter is possibly the location of RAF Evere as was.

From 6 September 1944 Evere was home to 132 Wing, RAF with its five squadrons of Spitfires.
The airfield was built by the Imperial German Air Force in 1914 and was home to the Belgian Air Force in the 1920s.

See the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evere_Airport
It's no longer an airport. The international airport is a few kilometres away at Zaventem

Hi Ray,
The move was only for a month or so, Croydon-Evere-Croydon, so I would say it was an attachment to Evere rather than full posting.
Since I think his parent unit remained Croydon he was still technically a Home Establishment.
Usual clue to a posting versus attachment is either (A) beside the unit or a corresponding date for an assessment of Character/Conduct. The assessment was to be done just before posting out or annually.
Another reason for attachment may be given in the Trade/Qualifications section as attendance on a course or LTTB/CTTB exam after retraining.

Hi Ross,
There is no 'A' indicating Attachment, however, it looks as though there was a Character Assessment on 31 Dec 45 ie 3 days after transfer to Evere. Assessed as 'VG' :). It looks like he was in Brussels for another 2 months before returning to Croydon. Sampling fries & mayonnaise? ;D

PS thanks to the other posts with info
