Title: Looking for John Connell in 1901
Post by: net64 on Thursday 15 August 13 22:20 BST (UK)
Hello, hoping someone can help me or give some suggestions where to look please!
Have started helping my husband with his family tree again after a few years.
We have trouble finding his grandfather on the 1901 census anywhere in Ireland. He was born in 1882 in Kingstown, Co Dublin.
He was on the 1911 census with his wife Sarah who he married in 1905.She is also missing from the 1901 census too ???.Would they have both known each other then?Maybe they went across the water :-\.Going mad trying to find him/them!
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Just had a quick look
There are parts of the 1901 census missing online.
He's in Desmond Ave in 1911 but I don't see it in1901

Do you know his parents names or any siblings?
What was Sarah's maiden name?

Sinnan thanks for the quick reply!
Yeh, I have the 1911 of the family in Desmond Ave but not finding them both in 1901 is driving the hubby mad altogether!
John had a sister Mary Ellen who would have been 5 in 1901( died in 1908).Can't find his parents either ???
Sarah's maiden name was Hoey.I have her parents Patrick and Jane on the 1901 but no sign of her r :(
If there are pieces missing online would it be worthwhile going up to the archives to have a look?

Thanks Annette

Yes I believe that's where they are kept, I'm not too familiar with Dublin stuff, I was trying to find some of their neighbours from 1911 and not having any luck so far.

When I looked for a missing townland in Kildare I went to Newbridge library and was able to look through the film rolls and got a print out of the return I wanted for 60c.
It might be worth asking Dun Laoghaire Heritage first.

Family Search shows the following
Marriage in Kingstown 18 June 1866
Patrick Hoey son of Patrick to Jane Gibney dtr of Patrick
their children recorded up to 1881
Catherine born 23 jan 1867
Patrick             26 feb 1868
Anne Jane        28 sep 1875
Michael            14 apr 1878

not saying this is definately her family only her birth cert would prove that.

Have you noticed something strange about the 1911 census entry for John Connell's family?
Son Thomas is aged 1 yr 6 mo but next is 'sister' Mary Connell aged 1 year 3 mo.

Oh yes and they had 3 children with only 2 living.
So Mary is John's sister!
Not impossible but that is one big gap if it's correct.
Worth finding his parents just to see their ages.

If Mary was John's sister, then perhaps the parents (or at least the mother) was dead. Another possibility to keep in mind is that the child could have been a sister to John's wife and called Connell because they were raising her.

Hi sinnan and aghadowey.Yes we both spotted that ages ago and its driving us mad!John was actually 29 in 1901.This is what is puzzling my husband.Never thought that it could be the wife's sister. We noticed one thing though. On the surname for baby Mary it looks like there was something else written first and then Connell written over.
The only thing we found this morning was a death for a Thomas Connell(John's Dad?)in 1908.Mary was born in 1910.Maybe the mother remarried :-\

John had a sister Mary Ellen who would have been 5 in 1901( died in 1908)

And than there was also this child.

John Wm Smith living at 17 Desmond Avenue in 1911 resides at Kellys Court Kingstown in 1901
Flatherty/Gilbertsons living at 19Desmond Avenue in 1911 reside at Millikins Court Kingstown in 1901.

Desmond Ave is on the historic 25" map on OSI.ie running parallel and between Wolfe Tone Ave and Tivoli Terrace east, not sure it there on the older map, need to look at it on a computer rather than a pad.
The dates of those maps are in a post here somewhere I'll have a look

Yes Mikebro posted the other day
I'm not sure the date of the historic map.
Edit: 25" is 1907-1908, 6" is 1837

So yes need to know if it existed in 1901. Good thinking jnoone.

Wolf Tone Ave doesn't appear in 1901 either

Found this, haven't read it all but the person is also looking for Heoy's.

Also it says Wolfe Tone Ave completed 1904 so good chance Desmond built about the same.

sinnan hi,there was no link posted there!

Tho Hubby thinks that Desmond Ave was built after 1901 but before 1905 when his grandparents got married

sinnan you are a star for finding that ;D
That's them alright. The kids names and ages correspond with the few that I have. How did they transcribed connell into Connelly. The wife was dead by then so I wonder if he remarried and baby Mary in 1911 is from his second marriage :-\

Also the hubby found that site earlier too while googling Desmond Ave and has since posted  there.
Thanks fro all your searching
Annette

p.s.Think Thomas died in 1908 so don't think Baby Mary on the 1911 is his.

Your welcome I enjoyed that.
Baby Mary as you say could be a second marriage but also as you said her surname looks like it was changed, she could come from the Heoy side, she could be a be a niece, a unmarried mother perhaps, they couldn't pass her off as theirs as they had a baby so sister next best thing.
She was so young she may not ever have known the truth.
