Hi Laffarsmith

Welcome to Rootschat    :)

Are you looking for forther information on these people ie. the parents of William Joseph BARKER bc1866  ???

If so, do tell us a bit more about them ie. do you have William Joseph on any census or any details from his marriage certificate.

This posting might get a better audience and, hopefully, some response if it is moved to one of the county boards which we can do for you when we have a better idea of where these events took place.

Best wishes

Ok, since you asked, I'll expound a little more. I'm actually looking for anyone with connections to these Barker's. I know there are a lot of Barker's out there and it has been hard tracking down this specific family. I also hope that other's searching for this family will find this post when searching for the Barker name and be able to tell if this is the correct Barker family for their records (and contact me too) :-).

I've not had any luck finding this family in the 1881 so if anyone can I'd love to know the details.

I have found William Joseph BARKER in the 1901, he was a Cabinet Maker living with his family at 64 Queens Road. I believe I have his wife Emily WARWICKER's birth index. I have his son William Charles BARKER's marriage and death entries.

And records from William Charles onward to Norah Edith and Ruth Magdalene onwards are more complete. Norah Edith is my maternal grandmother.

I would love any more details beyond William Joseph and the siblings Nelly, Amy and Elizabeth and anything at all about this family of BARKER's.

Any reason not to have the post here and again on the county board? Would that increase the chances of people searching for this family finding them? As a newbie I looked here first because the arrangement of surname primarily made things easier to see if anyone else was looking for the same thing.

Hi Laffar ...............

Rootschat guidelines require that posts are not duplicated ................ there being several reasons for this ie. people spending a lot of time looking for information that has already been supplied on another post and the boards not being cluttered with duplicate posts/requests.

As you could probably do with a bit of help to locate this family in the various census returns, it will do much better on one of the county lookup requests boards which those with the available resources check regularly to see if there is anything they can help with  :)

I think most people new to the board enter a search for their surnames so the post would come up in the results for BARKER.

I hope this makes sense to you.

Best wishes

Hi Laffar...........

It's a good idea to post the census that you already have so that everybody can see who they are looking for ie.

1901

64 Queen's Rd, St Leonards, Shoreditch

William BARKER head mar 35 cabinet maker b.Hoxton Mdx
Emily wife 31 b.Hoxton
William son 8 b.Buenos Ayres (sic) South America
Emily dau 5 b.Hoxton
etc. etc.

RG13/279 folio 7 page 5

Now to try and find them earlier ..............

Best wishes

lol Wow! You're quick and right on the ball. I couldn't have done that just then. My records only had the basics of that entry and until my new credit card arrives later this week I'm unable to get back into anything but the 1881 census records from Ancestry.com Thanks so much for posting it for me. I've learnt a fair bit about genealogy in the past couple of months while not having access to the other census records so when I do get back in I'll be copying all of the information directly to my records. :-)

Since you've already been so much help Casalguidi, how would I go about moving this thread to a county board? I'm not sure where exactly Hoxton is, does it count in Islington or Shoreditch, is it a part of Middlesex? (I'm trying to get familiar with English maps but at the moment most of it seems rather overwhelming.)

Hi laffarsmith

This link gives a good guide on posting for lookups http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,8643.0.html

I would suggest for Hoxton (which incidentally comes under Shoreditch) to post in the London Lookup Requests.

Good Luck with your research

Jonathan

Thanks Johnathon, it certainly helps to confirm Hoxton = Shoreditch.

I'm not actually after a lookup. In a few days I'll have access to the UK census' on Ancestry.com (when my new credit card arrives). I was hoping to connect with other users who are searching for BARKER's of Kent. Perhaps this thread belongs in the county section for Shoreditch? or London but not in the lookup requests?

Hi Laffar

I have moved your post to the general London board ............. most of the places mentioned are now in London .............. some were originally in parts of Middlesex/Kent now known as London so it is fine here.

Best wishes

Just an update now I've found a little more information.

BARKER, William J. (b. c1842) & UNKNOWN, Sarah S. (b. c1843) - children:
Ellen May "Nelly" (b. c1865)
William Joseph (b. 2 Jul 1866)
James (b. c1868)
Elizabeth C (b. c1879)
Amy S (b. c1861)

BARKER, William Joseph (1866) & WARWICKER, Emily (28 September 1870) - children:
William Charles (b. 17 May 1893)
Emily (Dolly) (b. 6 August 1896)
Maud Elizabeth (b. 2 June 1898)
Lillian Ellan (b. 17 November 1900)
Fredrick Edward (b. 5 March 1908)

BARKER, William Charles (c1893) & CARPENTER, Edith Elizabeth (c1896) - children:
R M (LIVING)
N E (LIVING)

BARKER, N E (LIVING) & CUNNEA, Daniel (1931)

BARKER, R M (LIVING) & HICKLING, Joseph Arnfield (1903)

I may have found William (c1842) with his mother in the 1861 Census however there are not enough details to confirm this information. He is the only William Barker born at that time in Shoreditch but it is possible there are records missing.

I have found William (c1842) with his wife Sarah and children Ellen, William and James living in Hackney in the 1871.

William and Sarah in the 1881 living with William, James, Elizabeth and Amy at 58 Banner Street, St. Luke, London. I haven't been able to find Ellen May.

In 1891 William and Sarah live in Shoreditch with their three daughters, Ellen, Elizabeth and Amy but sons William and James are missing. It's possible James died in 1890 in Kingston (v.2a p.227) I'll know more if/when I get a copy of the death certificate. It's also possible that William is boarding and works as a shopman RG12/2229 Folio:125 Page: 1.

In the 1901 Census I find William (1866) again, now living at 64 Queens Road in Shoreditch with his wife Emily and their children William, Maud (transcript error puts her name as Maria), Emily and Lily. His father William (c1842) is at 69 Acacia (difficult to read so could be mistaken on that) in Wood Green, Middlesex. It lists him as a widow which means Sarah died between 1891 and 1901. Still no sign of James however the sisters Ellen, Amy, and Elizabeth are living together at 34 Church Road in Hackney and working as Tailors.

I'm not sure where to go from here except to tighten up the details by tracking down BMD's for everyone listed here. Hopefully BMD's of William (c1842) will give more details about his parents. I have a possible birth record:
Name: Barker, William
Record Type: Births
Quarter: March
Year: 1841
District: Shoreditch
County: London Middlesex
Volume: 2
Page: 342

I won't be able to order any BMD's for at least a few weeks (and then have to wait a few more weeks for them) but will hopefully have more information eventually. :-) Anyone else looking for this line of Barker's? Or does anyone have any information they can add?
