Title: Joseph Thornton
Post by: highfield54 on Wednesday 14 August 13 14:50 BST (UK)
I have  at last found Joseph Thornton b. 1781  Armley Leeds St Bartholomew's  I have been searching for him 4or more years..his father was John Thornton also of Armley my concern is that John was Christened in 1761 & his first child William was b. 1773 which makes John only 12! his other children were Mary  1775...James 1777....John 1779...Joseph 1781....Ann 1783...Eleanor 1785...Hannah1792 I think this Hannah could have died as another was b. 1799 which was after John's death in 1798 all were b. in Armley  Leeds St Bartholomew's . I have looked for another John who's father was William but cannot find a connection. would you please look this John & his children to see if I have got it right.     Regards Helena (highfield54)

I think that the only connecting fact is that the children are all the children of John Thornton of Armley with no mother's name being listed.  I cannot see any hint of an occupation, which would help to perhaps unite or split the family/ies.  However, the baptism of John Thornton in 1761, son of William, does not quite fit - as you say he would only have been 12 (assuming he was baptised as a baby).  I'm also wondering what the notation is after John Thornton's burial entry in 1798 - other entries for males on the same page are shown as "M Man" and "Wid'r"  :-\  A little perplexing to say the least.

Can we confirm that the John son of Wm Thornton (Wortley) baptised 6th May 1761 at Armley St Bart's is the one we are talking about.
(Just that there are other Thornton named in earlier records)
