Post by: sccond on Tuesday 13 August 13 00:46 BST (UK)
Hi - Does anyone has any idea if birth records for Bass River, Kent, New Brunswick can be found online anywhere? The time period I'm interested in is the mid-1800's.

Thanks, Lisa

Have you tried the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. They have a lot of information available on line to search.

Yes I have.  I can find some info there, but not anyone's birth records.  There are about 8 children born from about 1860 to 1880 in Bass River. I am trying to confirm parentage of several of the children.

Thanks, Lisa

Hi!

Yes, it takes a little doing though.  Archives Canada has the data,

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1851/Pages/about-census.aspx

According to their site:

"While the census for New Brunswick and Nova Scotia was completed in 1851, Canada West and Canada East did not start their collection of data until the following year. Therefore, for Canada West and Canada East, what is known as the Census of 1851 officially began on January 12, 1852."

You need to look up the district and sub-district information first, then you can use that information to look at the scanned images.  Many districts have been lost to the demons of time, but some great information still exists.

Good Luck!

Parents - Andrew & Elizabeth Campbell; children as follows:
Ann M. - abt 1860, Andrew - abt 1862, Margaret M. - abt 1865, Malcolm M. - 1866, James William (William James) - abt 1868, Daniel M. - 1869 (my GGrandfather), Jessie Ann - abt 1872, Albert - abt 1873. And Vina Stewart (trying to find out who exactly her parents were) - 1882

Thanks, Lisa

Andrew Stewart and Elizabeth Campbell were the parents of Dugald Stewart born 1829 in Prince Edward Island and died February 7, 1907 in  Bass River, Kent County New Brunswick according to anc tree by this poster.
Dugald's wife was :- Louisa McKendrick born 1834 in New Bruswick, Canada and November 12th 1906 in  Bass River, Kent County New Brunswick.

Sandra and Mark,

yes this is the correct family. Dugald and Louisa are my GGGrandparents. There is a lot of Stewart/McKendrick info out there; I just really was hoping to find birth regs for their children. And trying to confirm parents of Vina Stewart, b-1882. In 1891 she is listed as a boarder in Dugald/Louisa household.  On her marriage cert in 1910 in Boston, she lists them as her parents. I'm guessing they raised her; wondering who her parents were.

Thanks for your help, lIsa

Nothing concrete from the record data bases I listed above.

My best guess would be that 17 yr old Margaret was pregnant with Vina in 1881 at time of census, and that Vina (born in 1882 - listed as a lodger) was with Margaret and Grandma at their house at time of 1891 census.

Tough one to prove without hospital records as church records are generally sealed in these situations.

Sorry I could not help more.

Hi Lisa,

Provincial Archives of New Brunswick and Familysearch don't seem to have the information you are seeking, if there had been another avenue I am pretty sure Valerie would have pointed you in that direction.
Have you tried Public Libraries or New Brunswick Genealogical Society to see if they could help you.
