Hi,
I wonder if someone can help me out, I have found a reference to Brave Liverpool Policemen, and two lists that have been taken from the Liverpool Mercury. What I am after is details on why the officers were being honoured.
My Interest is Serg 30H Now Sub Inspector William Kebby. What did he do to receive the award from the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society.
I would be very grateful if someone can come up with some answers for me, as I am trying to do this for a 95 year old lady who is the granddaughter of William.
Many Thanks :D

Liverpool city police have a great web site,
you can post there I believe ,there are plenty of photographs your friend may like to look at ,sadly the awards only go up to 1900,and there were plenty of them,
-
The award was on 16th May 1908 - the first list of awards is for The River Police
2nd list of awards including Sergeant William Kebby is for Constabulary Police
you can contact The Old Mersey Times Archives
oldm0251@old-merseytimes.co.uk their e-mail address
The River Mersey was incredibly busy AND violent around this time ...THOUSANDS of passengers travelling to far away shores America /Canada/ Australia/New Zealand /India etc and all the Merchant ships as well ...a hive of activity - this is only my thoughts - but as a Sergeant , I would have thought that it was something the River Police / Constabulary Police couldn`t handle and he was called in ...most Sergeants spent their time organising their Station and men ...so I would say it was something very important ... a nice memory for his grandaughter ...anyway ...contact them on that email addy
good luck
ADDED...here is a list of 1908 deaths and inquests - a big list and I have only glanced at it - you MIGHT find something pertaining to Serg Kebby here if you`re lucky
http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/deathsandinquests1908.html
obviously as Serg Kebby rescued someone from the river or a sinking ship you look for a River connection ..

You do seem to be following the correct family,
I tried the Royal Humane societies own website, and found no mention of the police officers awards,
The watch committee ,is this a separate body altogether,?
Ignore the question I have found my answer,
-
I think he was a mounted police officer,
the article I found would take for ever to type,
Gordon Highlanders For The Cape,
in brief,
outside the station a section of the Liverpool mounted police, who acted as an escort to the troops, was present under the superintendence of Sergeant Kebby, whilst about a 100 constables under the guidance of superintendant Breese assisted by inspectors Grant and Kitchen were distributed along the street to maintain a clear passage
Can you access the Liverpool Mercury November 10th 1899
OR CAN SOME CLEVER PERSON FIND A WAY TO Put it on the here please,
-
Thank you Radcliff so much for the information, that is great. I will contact the Liverpool City Police site. Thanks for the info on the Mounted police. That would make sense as he was in the 9th Lancers. garstonite yes that is the correct family. Hopefully I might get something more.

I have read a little into the subject, and I remember reading they did recruit from the army so the 9Th Lancers sounds good to,The Royal Humane society will do a search for you,but they charge for a copy certificate,
-
as a policeman he moved around - London Unemployed Riots and also Bristol where he was born
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results?basicsearch=sergeant%20kebby
you have to pay to view - but I think I have found your answer - though I can`t give you the full account.......
William Kebby ,residing at No 21 Chatterton Square was at Bath Parade and..."I witnessed the accident and promptly jumped in to rescue the little fellows ....."
so it looks like he jumped in the river to pull 2 small children to safety ...that`s nice ...and I hope the 95 yr old grandaughter of William Kebby gets GREAT pleasure knowing her Grandad saved 2 little childrens lives ....
now to find where Bath Parade was ??...living in Liverpool ,I am nosey now ...lol
added- found it
Princes Dock on the Waterfront

Thank you garstonite, that is great but it is not my William but his uncle, the event took place in 1867. Radcliff can you tell me how much The Royal Humane society will charge to do a search or for the certificate.
Thanks so much for all your help.
:D
-
Take this as a guide line prices do change,
£15.00 plus £5.00 postage,
its an on line ordering service, and you will need as many details as possible as a general search is not bringing his name up,use what Garstonite has given you when you apply and keep your fingers crossed,
-
Thanks Radcliff, I will give it a try. :D
