Title: Stanley Street Macclesfield
Post by: Brazzer on Saturday 10 August 13 11:38 BST (UK)
Does anyone remember or know anything about Stanley Street in Macclesfield? Anything is of interest including right up to when it was demolished (in the 60s I think) to make way for the Grosvenor Centre.

You can see Stanley Street in detail on the 1871 Town Plan at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=391624,373712

Thanks Stan - certainly is a lot of detail there. Does anyone have any anecdotal recollections, perhaps passed on by a friend or relative?

I remember an Army surplus shop on Stanley Street. Myself, my older brother and a friend all bought one-man rubber dinghies  there. Cost was about £3 10 shillings. We cut a sort of drag bag off from underneath and used them on the canal at Hr Poynton.

When was that Kim? Not sure what a drag bag is but it sounds fun!

About 1950. The drag bag was  a canvas  oblong  about 10 x 6 x6 inches which hung down underneath at the back end of the dinghy  with a 4 inch aperture to allow it to fill with water. The idea, I suppose it was to act a bit like a  weighted keel but because it hindered moving through the water (we made hand paddles out of plywood) we cut them off.
