Can anyone read what it says between the words "England" and "Canada" please. It is the year of arrival into Canada. It's for my gr gr grandmother who was born c1827 and was in Canada by 1860.
Thanks,
Karen

It doesn't look like figures to me.
I can see Maj/g...mn or wn
Would it be her surname? Or town she was from?

Here is a bit more of it, so you can see that the enumerator was capable of writing clear numbers. ::)

I'm not sure, her last name is Bowman (Sophia Bowman). She changes her mind all through the census years as to where she is born, sometimes Canada, sometimes England.

I wonder if anyone can change it positive to negative if that might help read it? For the life of me I can't figure out how to do that :-[

Hi Karen..Could it say "Migrant"/Migration

How about 'N given' - 'not given' or 'none given'

It could mean she went from England, arrived in NY then went on to Canada. Not sure what the faint print after NY says. You can try and look up passenger lists to NY in 1861, maybe? ::)

Thanks everyone!
I'm starting to think that it is "not given" :(

Hi Karen,
To change to negative, open in paint and invert.
I hope this helps in deciphering.
Kind regards

Thanks for that George! I thought it was Paint that you use to do that, but when I went to do it, it wasn't there, I have Windows 8 and maybe it's just hiding somewhere :-\

Karen it might help if we could see a little more of the scan. Those two boxes should show the year they entered Canada and year of Naturalisation

Hi Karen,
I don't have windows 7 or 8, as I prefer XP :)
I save all photographs and documents on the computer's wallpaper screen. Then I right click on photo or document and a drop down box appears with the programme paint.
Alternatively, click on start button at bottom left of screen; start/all programmes/accessories/paint.
If you use Adobe photoshop 6.0; and whilst the photograph or document is open in that programme, click on image/adjust/invert.
I hope this helps you find paint, or to invert :)
Kind regards
