Title: Hasson Long Tower Parish
Post by: Bona on Friday 09 August 13 23:58 BST (UK)
Does anyone have access to St Columba's Long Tower Parish records??

Have found Michael Hasson b.1858 to John Hasson and Catherine Mullin. I would like to find any other children born to this couple or even their marriage would be fantastic!!
Also info about where this church is located in Londonderry.

Thanks  for your help. Bona

They have their own website- history, old photos, etc.:
http://longtowerchurch.org/

See page 321 for what records have been microfilmed (available at PRONI, Belfast and Coleraine Library in Co. Londonderry)- you might also be able to order the film(s) from your local LDS library for a small fee to be viewed there.

Hi,
Cannot find the marriage but two other children, as well as Michael, were baptised in Long Tower Roman Catholic Church, Catherine in 1853 and Bridget in 1855. The Long Tower Church is just off Bishop Street Without going towards Lecky Road.

By the way, the mother's name has the more common spelling MULLAN.

Hi Kingskerswell,

Thanks for that info, But i am a bit confused now. Maybe this isn't my family after all?? My Bridget came here to NZ in 1883 saying  she was 23 on the ships record. that makes her birth about 1860.I think 1855 is a bit early. The entry for Michael is the only one I have ever found linking John Hassen and Catherine Mullan, Bridget's parents.Well who I thought could be her parents.
Can you tell if there was an informant on the record for the other births?

Civil registration of births began in 1864. The earlier records are baptism entries and there will probably be paretns listed as well as sponsors/godparents but not informants.

The danger with finding online records is that you can assume a record belong to the person you are reaearching. Not all records survive and of those that do not all are online. It was not uncommon for ages to vary or parents to name a child with the same name as a deceased sibling. Therefore, the 1855 baptism might not be the correct person, it might be her but age is slightly different than in other records or it could be a sibling who died before she was born.

Sorry Bona, I only have the bare bones of some early Long Tower baptisms. As Aghadowey says many people in those days only had the vaguest idea of their date of birth and a five year discrepency is very common in the 1901 and 1911 census.

great information. It did cross my mind that the 1855 Bridget could have been a deceased sibling.
On the 1858 Michael entry from Long Tower Parish the sponsor was a Rose Hasson, which at a wild guess I thought could be John Hasson's sister. So I went to Bill Macafees 1831 census and found a Rose Hasson in Loughinsholin, Magher, Fallagloon.Consecutive reference numbers included a Bridget, Francis, Francis, John, (Rose), and Michael all at the same location. Would that be a family unit? And where is Fallagloon in relation to Long Tower? Some of Bridget's children were named John, Francis, Michael.
Thank you Aghadowey

The 1831 Census only lists the name of the head of household (only other details included are numbers of males/females and a religious breakdown of how many RC/C of I/Presbyterian/other in house). Fallagloon is a townland in Maghera Parish and probably about 30 miles of so from Derry city.

Hi Bona,
First time using this forum, hopefully my message reaches you.  I seen you were searching for a Hasson connection in Co Derry.  Did you find your connection?

Hi CHasson,

No I have not found any connection yet.
My g.grand mother was Bridget Hassen born c.1863. Her parent's were John Hassen and Catherine Mullen. Variant spellings very likely as Bridget could not read or write hen she arrived in NZ in 1882.
Her father was a farmer on her marriage cert.
Does your grandfather know of any ancestors  who emigrated to New Zealand.
