Title: Can anyone help?
Post by: sussexkim on Friday 09 August 13 13:37 BST (UK)
I'm looking into my g g grandfather Charles Newnham who lived in cuckfield, I've noticed on the 1911 census that it states they had 10 children but 3 had died, we were only aware of 1 who had died (Frances violet). I have looked on freebmd and found 3 possibilities for the other 2, they all were born between the others and died in infancy but now I'm not sure how to find out which 2 are the right ones or indeed if any of them are! Other than getting the birth certificates is there any other way of finding out parents names?
The ones I've found are:
Florence rose Newnham b. sep 1898 d. Mar 1903
James Newnham b. mar 1900 d. Jun 1901
Female Newnham b. dec 1906 d. Dec 1906
Neither Florence or James appear with them in the 1901 census but if they were poorly and residing in hospital would they show on a different census?
I'm getting v confused!
Any help appreciated, I don't want the other 2 to be unknown and forgotten.
Thanks Kim

Have you looked (in the Cuckfield Dist.) for Flo* & James on the 1901 census - theres 2 or 3 good candidates age-wise ....

I have now found Florence with another Newnham family so it's not her. I'm thinking therefore it will be James and the unnamed female but will keep checking!
Thanks
Kim

Kim, according to familysearch, Florence Rose Newnham was baptised 4/9/1898, Burgess Hill (Cuckfield RD) D/O James George Newnham & Rose Annie, so as you say, not your family.  Would be a good idea to identify James & the female Newnham from burial or baptism records rather than assume  ;)

You could contact the Sussex Family History Group (SFHG) http://www.sfhg.org.uk/ & ask for a look up on their burial & baptism data base.  The name NEWNHAM has more than 600 entries on the burial list so you might get lucky.
As the 1901 census was taken on the night of 31 March/1 April by rights James should appear on it so worth looking for him,

Cuckfield burials are online so you might find them here with a note of parents' names

Thank you I have searched the burial records and found a John Newnham who was born aug 1890 and died sept 1890 and I found the unknown female child in the burial records as the daughter of Charles Newnham. I feel so much happier now that these children will not be fogotten.
Thank you kim

Hi Kim,
It seems you have found them but I have the register index for Cuckfield so will double check baptisms for you.  Will look when I have time after the weekend.
