Hi Tati wonder if you have any thoughts on the following. Recent research for some one came up with Edward Kemp being in Warwick Prison in 1871 census. Searched the database that you gave and there is no sign of him.

Sorry Al, I'm afraid I can't help at all :-\
(Did I give the impression of being a Prison specialist? :-X ;) ;D)

Sorry, no, as you put on the website address in my muddled way I just thought that you may know more about the subject. Frustration probably played a part as I have a person in Warwick prison in 1871, the site you gave lists all in Warwickshire up for trial between 1801 and 1900 and that person is not on it.
Possibly the answer is that the crime and trial were in another county and said prisoner were sent back to nearest prison to their home.

The link for prisoners does not go there

Ooh what a shame! :(
The whole www.warwickshire.gov.uk site looks a little strange. Let's hope it's temporary!!
Update: Seems to be back :D

The series of Assize calendars is very incomplete at first. It starts with a few isolated calendars for prisoners held at Warwick Gaol (Summer 1801; Lent 1809; Lent 1829; Lent 1839; Lent 1841), but from 1849 to 1857, 1869 to 1871, 1874 to 1881 and 1888 to 1900 most calendars survive and have been indexed.
The calendars of Quarter Sessions prisoners are practically complete from 1800 to 1900, but the index does not at present cover the years 1840 to 1846 or 1879 to 1884 (with the exception of Epiphany 1879 and Midsummer 1883).
the above was taken from the website explaining about the prisoner records - so if your ancestor was in prison in 1871 when the census was taken - but he was up in court say 3 or 4 ::) years previous, there are missing records between 1857-1869 - so this could well be why you can't find him.....

Thanks for posting this website, I'm pretty sure I've found something relating to my ancestors ... as a victim, I hasten to add! ;D
I've copied down all the reference information but it's not clear where I go now. Does anyone know?
Many thanks,
Janet
