Title: Shelbourne family and their ancestors
Post by: Yorkyboyl on Tuesday 06 August 13 15:55 BST (UK)
Hope someone can help me before I take a wrong turn...I have been looking for various dates connected to the Shelbourne family who lived in and around the Grantham area. Several of the research sites only give the relevant quarter of the year concerned, and not exact dates, and only show Grantham itself as the place of birth/marriage/death. I have been to the archive office at Lincoln but did not find anything, mainly because I did not know the parish that I was looking for. Can anyone offer any advice other than apply for every certificate individually, which would be somewhat expensive?
I have a William Shelbourne, b. A/M/J 1892 Grantham, his father John William Shelborn b. O/N/D 1862 Welby, who married Mary Jane Pulford A/M/J 1889 Grantham, she in turn being born O/N/D 1863 Grantham....and several others.
I could not find any of these under Grantham records, hope someone can help , please.

 Thanks

maybe not your family  ???

24th October 1828. Stamford Mercury.

On Sunday last a melancholy instance of sudden death occured at Buckminster,
A respectable carpenter and joiner of Grantham named William Shelbourn,
left home in the morning ,accompanied by a friend, to spend the day at the above place,
immediatly after partaking of a hearty dinner,
He had occasion to go in to the garden,
where He was found a corpse, after absents of no more than ten minutes, having died in a fit of apoplexy.
A surgeon was instantly sent for, but the vital spark had irrecoverably fled.
an inquest was held on the body on Monday before T, Clarke, gent, coroner.
the deceased was in his 49th year and has left a widow and two children.

Thanks for the newspaper items about the Shelbourne family, not sure yet where these people fit into the jigsaw but I suspect they are related somehow.
 Cheers

It looks to me as if one name has been changed to another ... but I'm not sure which.  :-\

I think the names are Harlaxton (which is near Grantham) and Harmston (near Lincoln). :)

EDIT: in 1871, I see them living in Leicestershire at a place called Harston :D
Only just in Leics - map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=483715&Y=331960&A=Y&Z=120

In 1861, they were actually living in Sheffield.

Hi Yorkyboyl, I'm related to the Shelbourne's of the Grantham area. My Grandmother was Daisy Shelbourne 1921-1993. Her father being Percy Alfred Shelbourne, Born in Denton 1897-1971. William was known as William Herbert Shelbourne born on 7 mar 1896 in Grantham. He was my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. He died on 14 Apr 1986 he lived at Beckside, Middle St, North Hykeham. His cremation took place on the 17 April 1986 which i have found on Deceased online. It just gives the location as Lincolnshire. Mary Jane Pulford was born on the 20th Nov 1863 at Barrow Lane, Grantham, i have she died on 26 Nov 1933 in Wakefield. Any other help i can give please get in touch. Are you related to them.

Hi there,
Apologies for the slight delay replying, but I have just returned from a weekend visiting the Shelbourne family....I will try to explain as simply as possible.
Firstly I am only related to them by marriage, as follows
My sister in law Jane Harper b.1955 is married to Paul Michael Shelbourne, b. 1955, they married in Oct. 1978 in Leeds.  Paul's parents were Fred Shelbourne 1929-1995 and Edna Bray 1931-2011, they married in 1953. Paul's paternal grandparents were Wilfred Shelbourne 1892-1957 and Amelia Whitehead 1896-1965, who married in 1919. Wilfred was the older brother of William Herbert of 1896 fame, and they were two of the six children of John William Shelbourne and Mary Jane Pulford.
I hope this is easy to follow, I do have various bits of information on several generations going further back and also on the maternal side of the family if you need any.
Keep in touch if there id anything I can help with.
  Brian

Hi, thanks for getting back to me,  Paul is my 4th cousin 1 x removed. We share the same 4 x great grandparents on my side. Them being Joseph Shelbourn 1802-1875 & Ann Duffin 1802-1872. If you would like to speak more, I'm on facebook messenger and on Ancestry. Sue
