The gentleman on the left is almost definitely a sailor in the Royal Navy - his ship is emblazoned on his cap. I can't make out whether that's a black ribbon on his cap-band or something on the print. Could he be in mourning(?)

I'm not sure about the other gent with the pale-coloured lapels - he looks like a hospital or medical orderly or volunteer - or he could be an inmate/patient in a military hospital.

If you retake the photo with flash turned OFF you'll get much better results - do it by daylight or indirect electric light - taking care to avoid glare, reflections and shadows :)

The guy on the right is wearing "Hospital Blues" if you post his name...it's possible to trace him if he was wounded and got a silver war badge.

hi,

my sister has some ww1 medals but we thought they were grandads on the other side of the family - ill ask her to dig them out -

his mothers name is harriett Scholes - they were living in Bolton on the 1911 census but hes listed as born in Ainsworth and that birth would have been registered in Bury at that time

not sure Carol the parents are Harriett and thomas but the age and dates fit - i would like to find more info about his service record and possibly who the lad is in the picture - if this uniform is called hospital blues does it mean they took the picture in hospital ?

Hi Andrea

. . . if this uniform is called hospital blues does it mean they took the picture in hospital ?

In or around a military hospital or convalescent home I would think - he's still in the Army at this point. Regarding the naval uniform and the white duck cap I am unclear about the change back from dark blue after WW1 which might provide a date. A link on the Armed Forces/WW1 board would likely answer this.

Hi all

After further research I have now found out that the lad to the right is my great uncle Herbert who served on naval vessels in ww1 and the left is his brother John (my grandad which i already know). I'm not too sure if i can enlarge the writing on the lads cap and i did think it read ambulance service, but after reading his service record on ancestry it may well be the name of a ship as he served on several and it may be my eyes trying to guess - and it may well say HMS and then a name but ill have to try to enlarge the original.
The ships were Tiger, vivid 1, and several others , his service number was ss8174 and he was a few years younger than grandad.
Herbert did not perish in the war - he lived until he was 75 , but I dont have any other details , as mum and her brother are now passed ,I would like to find out some more details and perhaps pass on the picture to his family if they don't have it as i don't know if he ever got married .
He did not die in the war
