Thank you very much for this,Sorry, I put Maxwell on the tag because the lads relation is Maxwell. the lad is Robert Barr age about 18 ,from Neilson just outside Glasgow He served in WW1 with the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. And most thankfully, he survived the war.
This is such a fantastic site, thank you all, for your efforts.
These pictures have restarted interest in the Familiy History and will be back in frames where they belong!

Cheers Matt

Just a point on naming the photos, This should be done all the time, I dont know how many old family photos ive seen and because a generation is lost. no one knows who is in the pictures.
Such a shame.

Hi,
Don't wish to offend anyone, but the correct spelling is Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
Regards
Bob.

I think your soldier is wearing the Hodden grey kilt of the London Scottish, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders wore the Black Watch tartan and a red/white dicing on the Glengarry.
That is not to say he wasn't in The A&SH at some time, he may have been transferred to or from one or the other.
The cap badge does have a look of the A&SH but the London Scottish badge is also a large round one and on an unclear pic are similar.

Hi James
The family said he was born 1898, He Survived the war But  I could not find any A&SH age 20 on the Silver badge awards 1914-1918 ?

I feel that this soldier is London Scottish, sometimes when regiments suffered large casualties in battle remnants of the regiment were transferred to other regiments, perhaps that is so here, but an  Argyll and Sutherland Highlander wearing the black watch kilt on very old ww1 pics the tartan is still visible, I can't see any tartan in your man's kilt and that suggests London Scottish who wore a plain Hodden Grey kilt and the plain black Glengarry.
It took me a while to reply as I wanted to be sure.

" Sorry, cannot tell you about this Robert Barr but I came across a service record on Ancestry for another Robert Barr from Neilston (address is Maryville) and he did serve with A&SH. Born 1895. Service numbers 4613, 5780 and 302993"
