				Hi
Bit of a mystery, what is this object that appears to be worn on this ladys mourning dress.
It looks a little like a gas cylinder but think this wont be the case, so what could it be.??

				Could it be a chatelaine?

				Hi Mahalia

You could be right, I have just had a look online at different chatelaine's and in some cases they carry a spectacles case and some of them do look something like this, very interesting learning something new that I didn't know five mins ago.
 Thank you.

 David.

How do you know it's a mourning dress?

 Because I doubt it.

 Cheers,

Why do you doubt that it is a mourning dress ?

Why do you doubt that it is a mourning dress China will tell you it's because it's not black & it's unlikely adornments would have been worn if she was in mourning.

A chatelaine was really worn hanging from a belt, and hung much lower down and had houshold keys and perhaps a pair of  small scissors, suspended from the chain.I wonder if it is a container for something like Sal Volatile, or smelling salts.Much  needed by over-corsetted ladies.
The clothing does appear lighter than black.

				Hi dfk:

Could we see more of the photo? Whatever else is happening in the scene might provide an answer.
