Post by: susan j on Monday 29 July 13 14:56 BST (UK)
Hi!
How would I go about finding who exactly was living in a house in Crail in Fife in 1898? I only have the address, no names.
Thank you!!
Susan

Try this link which has some free census records: http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I find it quite useful as you can search from house to house, but not every area in Scotland has been transcribed yet so see how you go.

You would look in the Valuation Rolls. They were compiled and published annually, and they list the name of the occupier of each house. Some of these are now online at Scotland's People. If you check the 1901 census and the 1895 Valuation Roll and find the same name in both, you can probably infer that that is who lived there in 1898. If not, you will need to get someone to go to the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, or some other repository where they can check the 1897/8 and 1898/9 VRs.
