Title: Robert Walton - Kirkhaugh born 1780s-90s
Post by: hatofthecat on Monday 29 July 13 13:53 BST (UK)
I have a Robert Walton who marries a Mary Scott in Knar(e)sdale, Northumberland in 1813.  In the original transcript of the register it notes Robert is from parish of Kirkhaugh (about 3 miles North of Alston).

I'm having trouble tracking down a likely birth for him, Kirkhuagh 1780s/90s.  I've tried Familysearch but I don't know how complete their listings are for this parish.  Is there a full register for Kirkhaugh published by anyone ?  I couldn't see anything for this period at NHDFS or Ancestral Indexes.

Trouble is also that every other person around Alston area seems to be a Walton... ::)  Alston registers are stuffed full of them (I've already researched another Walton line in my tree from there).

Thanks for any help, Pete

Pete,
I also have Robert Walton and Mary Scott, my direct ancestors. The marriage entry says that Robert is of Kirkhaugh but that doesn't mean he was born there. One of the witnesses is Robert Walton Senr.
I believe he is Robert Walton son of Robert Walton and Mary Reay and was baptised at Allendale on 22 July 1792, born at Fawside Green Houses, Allenheads. He died at New Angerton in 1841.
Like you say, there are an awful lot of Waltons. I have a cousin, surname Walton, of Alston...absolutely no relation to my Waltons. :)

Thanks for the assistance janwhin  :)

Robert & Mary are also direct ancestors of mine being my 4 x great grandparents.  My maternal grandmother carried the Walton name from their line as her middle name and so did my grandfather with his coming from the line of his mother a Walton descended from Alston based Walton's.  This they passed on to my mother and uncle and one of my cousins... there truly is no escape from them Walton's  :o

They're my 3 x great grandparents. I'm descended from their son, Robert.

"They're my 3 x great grandparents. I'm descended from their son, Robert."

Me too... then via Jane the daughter of Robert (the younger)

I have Robert (the younger) as marrying an Elizabeth Moor based on census and their children's birth/baptism information.  I'm guessing around 1841 but I can't find a marriage, have you had better luck ?

Pete,
I'm descended from another daughter....Bella. I have a photograph of Bella with Jane and, I think, another sister, Mary. Robert did marry Elizabeth Moor but no wedding record. Another brother married at Gretna so I guess ours was probably a cross border too.

Gretna makes sense... I was thinking that may have been the case too having seen the other one.

If it were possible to have a copy of the picture with Jane in it that would be great !  Just send me a private message for my email address.  My cousin in Morpeth is the keeper of photos for that side of the family but I/we don't know what he's got.
