May I ask some questions about your elusive Andrew RENWICK ....
:) What were his parents' names
:) When and where born (May 1853-22 = 1831 ish)
:) Where have you already looked for him
:) How do you know he came to Australia
Have you tried the fantastic live links within each of the child boards at RChat's Australian Resources Board ..... :) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,165.0.html
Your post has actually managed to land itself on the Australian Lookups completed board.
I will let a moderator know, and I will ask them to move it to the main Aussie Board. :)
Cheers, JM
And not to overlook this fantastic thread :)

Many thanks Jim for all the helpful information which I will follow up.
Andrew was born abt 1831 in Hamilton Lanarkshire to James Renwick and Margaret Gage.
1851 he was living in Glasgow with his parents and siblings. So he must have made his way to Australia between 1851 and 1853. I know this because his parents have his death inscripted on a Headstone at the family grave in Hamilton Old Parish Church, Lanarkshire.

Hi,
A possibility location .
There was outstanding letters for a Andrew Renwick of Melbourne being held at the Melbourne GPO in November 1852.

Unclaimed letters would be returned back to the GPO then a list of recipients Gazetted in this case it was the Victorian Government Gazette in November 1852. There were hundreds of names gazetted in this list including an Andrew Renwick of Melbourne.

Looks like his arrival into Victoria:

Many thanks for this info re his arrival in Melbourne. I didnt expect to get all this help !
I've searched the link given for BMD's in Victoria but not found anything for his death. Maybe he moved on?
Poor lad was only there just over a year when he died....very sad.

This doesn't add anything new but you may find it of interest.
TROVE has an announcement of the arrival of the ship Cuthberts from Greenock. A Renwick is in the passenger list.

It's really difficult to trace some of the young men who came to Australia and died with no family and, perhaps, few friends, or at least few friends who knew the family background. There may have been no-one who knew any details about him, or able to identify him; or, as you say, he may well have moved on from Victoria. (Australian BMD records are kept by each State - some have on-line indexes, some don't.) I do not see a death listed in the Australian Death Index but that index has many errors and omissions.
Is there any indication of the date of his death on the MI? If the parents were informed of his death then it would seem likely that there is a formal record - somewhere ???

Thank you Judith.
The headstone only has his date of death and that he died in Australia.
Still, I have more info than I had this morning which is great. Perhaps something will turn up - I'll keep looking. He's a distant relative but, I'd still like to know how he died.

Hi Moira
Please could you give the date that's on the gravestone?
It may just help :) (or not). :-\

You are seeking information prior to the introduction of civil registration in the Colony of Victoria. Many early registrations were transcribed to the Registry from parish records and are noted as such. Andrew arrived in Victoria at the beginning of the gold rush [1851-late 1860's] and I wonder if that was the reason for him emigrating from Scotland. As Judith has mentioned a date may be helpful.
The name RENWICK caught my eye as I have RENWICK's from Lanarkshire in my tree...and yes there were probably thousands of them ;)
Cheers :)

Cando and Judith
The date he died was 10 May 1853.
And now I know why he probably left Scotland - thank you !

Hi, thought there may have been a notice in the digitised newspapers site for a death/injury if we had a more definite date but couldn't see anything.
Someone else may be able to check to see if there was as inquest for him. Sometimes a death that was dealt with by an inquest doesn't appear on the usual BMDS. Unfortunately I don't have access to inquests in Victoria.

Scoured the deaths & inquests & nothing for an Andrew RENWICK :(
The only one that looks possible is this parish record in NSW:
SHENNICK Andrew age 24yrs 1853
Parish: Sydney, St James, Roman Catholic
Ref Number: V1853407 119

Thanks Judith & Merlin......so good of you to spend time on this.
Andrew would not have been Catholic...so I don't think this is him.
If I make any progress myself I will let you know here on the forum.
