Title: 1861 Census - Relation to Head states Mart Why?
Post by: cfbrown459 on Sunday 28 July 13 16:59 BST (UK)
I think I have located someone in my family tree on the 1861 census but I am a little stuck why the Relation to Head shows as Mart?  Does anyone know why this might be?

The family in question I know from the 1871 census had two or three children by then but could have been more as William and Sarah were married in 1848 I think.

William Brown B.1823 in Lichfield, Staffordshire
Sarah Brown nee Bird B.1827 in Whittington, Staffordshire
George Brown B.1859
Charlotte Brown B.1860
Ann Brown B.1861, Lichfield (believe she was born after the census was taken)

I have them living at Victoria Crescent, Horninglow, Staffordshire, District 19, Ecclesiastical parish District Holy Trinity page 29 with another family or so Ancestry and find my past both show.

I wonder whether the enumerator wrote Mar for Married in the wrong column then added H of Head at the end??

Never thought of that thank you.  Whilst I am on would birth places on census records slightly change from one census to the next?  Just curious with Sarah Brown nee Bird on this one

I  agree  with Kay  and groom ............... if  you   enlarge the  original  ,  there  is a H  at the end   of the column  ( albeit a rather squashed  H  )

Sarahs' birthplace in 1861 is transcribed as Winkcollie on FindMyPast and it does look like that.
