I have Robert Strang Mather born in Hamilton in 1825, son of Robert Mather and Elizabeth Steven.
I have a Robert Mather born in Hamilton 1808 the eldest son of James Mather and Ann Smith. James Mather is the son of Robert Mather and Janet Strang.
I am trying to establish a connection between Robert Strang Mather and Robert Mather born 1808, however the marriage of Robert and Elizabeth Steven is in 1818 in Hamilton which means that Robert would only have been 10 years old.
I have seen another marriage on Ancestry between a Robert Mather and Elizabeth Steven but my attempts to contact the tree owner have proved unsuccessful.
Can anyone help me find the other marriage and possibly make the connection to Robert born 1808. I have been unable to find Robert Strang Mather in the 1841 and 1851 Census.

Hi I am researching Robert Mather born circa 1777. He married Catherine Stevenson and their first child was born in 1803 in Blantyre. I often wondered if there aS a link to the Mathers from Hamilton...do you have any Roberts Round this time period?

JAMES MATHER Married ANN SMITH 17/07/1808 Hamilton
ROBERT MATHER Parents JAMES MATHER/ANN SMITH Baptism 22/10/1808 Hamilton
It looks like Robert was the son of John below brother of James above.

ROBERT MATHER Married ELISABETH STEVEN 20/12/1818 Hamilton
ROBERT STRANG MATHER Parents ROBERT MATHER/ELISABETH STEVEN Baptism 17/03/1825 Hamilton
I guess that makes ROBERT MATHER 1808 & ROBERT STRANG MATHER 1825 cousins.

There is a headstone in Hamilton parish churchyard with the simple inscription
"1841 Robert Mather".
Another stone - "The burying place of William Mather and Jean McCrodie and their children 1805".
(This is definately a marker stone, simply there to mark the family burial plot, the entire family wouldn't have died in 1805).
From the baptism register of the 1st Relief Congregation Church in Hamilton -
3 entries, lawful children of William Mather (workman & meal dealer) & Mary Jack his spouse,
MARY, born 12th August 1778.
MARY, born 11th September 1779.
GAVIN, born 24th April 1786.
2 entries, lawful children of Robert Mather and his spouse Katherine Henderson,
MARY, born 26th March 1783.
KATHERINE, born 12th April 1789.

My Robert had his 1st child in Blantyre, 2nd in Boness and 3rd in Culross. He moved about a bit probably with his job in the mines. He is noted as serving with the Royal.Military Artificers about 1805 can find no death or entry on 1841 census (culross entries lost).
I'm really not sure where they came from...I did always wonder if there was a connection to the Hamilton Matherd since Blantyre was close.

I can only see two Robert Mather’s born near 1777 both in Angus but I would have thought the one I posted on 22 October was a good possibility.
