I would like to order two marriage certificates for two brothers but have no idea of the spouses maiden names or years in which they were married. I know the brothers dates of birth, deaths, fathers name and area that they would have been married. Is it possible to do this or do I have to know the maiden names of the two ladies involved. Also as someone would have to search for the records for me is the cost involved increased by much. I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong section of the forum.
Thank you.

Hi
Depending on roughly when the marriages took place - you can try freebmd
www.freebmd.org.uk which has coverage into the late 1940's
Marriages from 1912 show spouse surname alongside the entry. Click on the page number to get the christian name
If they are all now deceased - post details here and we will see if we can help
-
Thank you. I will try that this evening.

Oh thank you again. I hadn't read your reply properly first time. Yes both brothers are deceased and these are the details I have for them.
John William Jones. B. 21 Sept. 1907. South Shields. D 11 July 1946. Hereford. Buried in Chatham Kent. I am told he was married in the South Shields area.
Benjamin Jones. B. 27 May 1902. South Shields. D 2 January 1964. South Shields.
Their Fathers name was also Benjamin Jones B 1879. Westoe.Durham. Cartman.
Their Mothers name was Margaret Appleton. B 1881 Westoe Durham.

I think online certificates from the GRO
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
are cheaper if you have the GRO reference. You do not have to give the names of both parties if you have this reference. You will need to create an account, certificates are £9.25 each.
As Carole suggests, a search on freebmd may give you the spouses' maiden names for free without a certificate [which are very useful for confirming the names of the fathers of each party] if you know the forename.
I suggest for each search you specify;
[1] the likely area of the marriage [county or town] which you say you know
[2] the relevant brother's name [and spouse's forename if you know it]
[3] a span of years to search depending on the brother's year of birth - I suggest 10 years either side of age 30.
On freebmd marriages before 1912 will usually give you 4 names if you click on the page number, hopefully 2 males & 2 females. If you do not know the brides' forenames you will have to order the certificate with the GRO reference & the male's full name. Again, as Carole says, after 1912 you get the surname anyway.

So....I found
South Shields:
1930 Jun quarter 10 a 1617 John W Jones to Emma Goodwin
1931 Dec quarter 10 a 1525 John W Jones to Margaret A Kane
1923 Mar quarter 10 a 1290 Benjamin T Jones to Rose Croft
1924 Mar quarter 10 a 1155 Benjamin Jones to Mary J Bell
If you have the death certificates for the brothers, you may have their widows' forenames if they were the informants.
-
Thank you both very much for your help. Unfortunately I have no idea of forenames or maiden names & am finding this really difficult. Partly I think, because the of the brothers surname and also because I don't seem to have a clue what I'm doing! Lol!
-
Wow. That's brilliant. Thank you. I have the death certificates but Johns informant was his Mother and Benjamins says C Jones his son.

If you know when and where C JONES was born, the birth registration ought to tell you his mother's maiden name.
:)

Thank you Geoff. Unfortunately I have no idea about C Jones whatsoever! I seem to be going round in circles.

If you know C Jones' forename, you can search on freebmd for his birth [say ca 1923 - 40] likely in South Shields as Benjamin seems to have lived his life there & you will get his mother's maiden name.
There is a birth for (*) 1934 Jun quarter 10a 1128 Mother's maiden name Bell. A possibility which can only be confirmed with the birth or marriage certificate.

What you can do is use the references josey supplied above but stipulate on the GRO form that the fathers name is Benjamin. Then if the reference doesn't tie in they shouldn't send the certificates.
Or you could phone the GRO with the four references and say you only want the two that have Benjamin as the father - I believe there is no longer an extra charge for this, but they will confirm or not

There were two C JONES (boys) born in South Shields in the relevant period ...

Births Jun 1934

EDIT: too late ::)

I can't tell you all how excited I feel with the information you have given. I know it all has to be proven but there does seem a strong possibility that Bell is Benjamin's wife and you've even given me possibilities for their son! As for John, his wife and children were also in the same region so I now need to follow your logic and try to find more details of him.
I am amazed and so thrilled with your help as I have been so stuck. I have decided that I can't be thinking of things logically and am totally useles!
Thank you again and again ;D ;D

Apologies - it's so easy to get carried away when you think are on to cracking something.

The person I [foolishly] named from the 1934 birth appears to be on Genes Reunited. Perhaps smileyriley could contact them there. PM me if you cannot access the name or if you would like me to contact them on your behalf. And another GR member has Benjamin Jones & Mary J Bell - they might have the marriage certificate & save you paying £9.25 ;)

Two Ancestry trees have John married to Beatrice M Apperley.
She first married Hedley T Dewey in Ledbury in Sept 1925.He died very young in June 1935.
I can't find a further marriage for her to John W Jones though.
She died in Herefordshire in 1986.

Thank you once again to everyone who has taken the time to help me. I didn't expect that at all. I am now in the process of messaging all contacts that have been brought to my attention in the hope that someone will have the proof I need for the correct marriages etc.
If any of these contacts come up trumps it will all be down to your help and kindness.
For now, its fingers crossed......
