Title: Knit and Crochet Poppies for WW1 Remembrance Project
Post by: casalguidi on Tuesday 23 July 13 17:31 BST (UK)
Last year over 75 people worldwide knitted and crocheted poppies to adorn the "Road of Remembrance" in Folkestone, Kent for Remembrance Sunday.  The project was co-ordinated by Purl Queens who would very much like to have even more donated poppies this year thus be delighted to accept either knitted or crocheted poppies from all over the world.

Personally, I think this is a wonderful project and am sure there must be other Rootschatters who would very much like to make a poppy or two in remembrance of their families involved in the great war.   If you can't knit or crochet then perhaps there's a mum, granny, aunt, neighbour, friend or work colleague who could spare a little time to make one on your behalf.

All knitted or crocheted poppies should be sent to "Purl Queens, 104a Sandgate High Street, Sandgate, Folkestone, Kent, England CT20 3BY"

Photographs of last years installation https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.421888494543976.96587.130976250301870&type=3 c/o Purl Queens main facebook page https://www.facebook.com/purlqueens

Perhaps we could list here any suitable knitting and crochet patterns that we find and, a lovely suggestion from Sarah, photos of our finished poppies before we send them off :)

There seem to be quite a few free crochet patterns out there.  I think these are UK ...... US have different names for the stitches I think or their double crochet isn't the same as the UK version etc. - please correct me if I'm wrong somebody.

This 2 petal one looks relatively easy with clear step by step diagrams
http://thestitchsharer.com/2012/11/04/remembrance-poppy-free-crochet-pattern/

4 petals in 4 ply or DK (scroll down to link to pdf document)
http://www.wendy-poole.co.uk/page18.html

4 petals in DK

3 petals

I haven't tried any yet but I will be doing so.

Thank you. The look relatively easy to do , particularly the first one. I may try all four if I feel adventurous!

Great project, I have several projects in hand but will keep it in mind, may be in time for next year if I miss the deadline for this year .... I know, it's a while until November and they will be easy to do, definitely in memory bank now anyway  :) mare

Thanks for the crochet patterns, I'd like to do this  :)

Me too.  Now to dig out those crochet hooks (and my memory of how to do it).  I used to do those squares and make baby blankets, so should be able to manage these.

Well I eat my words!  The 2 petal crochet poppy isn't as easy as it looks or at least what I finished up with did not resemble a poppy or any kind of flower ;D

My eyes aren't what they were so it may be the counting but nonetheless I found an easy stylised poppy which only involves one stitch and is just round.  I quite liked how it was turning out even if not quite like the picture in the tutorial (see my pic) ;D
http://fabact.co/flowersandfurbelows/crochetflowers/crochetpoppy.html

If anybody is interested I did the "Large Disk".

Begin as pattern
Round 1 as pattern
Round 2 as pattern (3 dc into each space)
Round 3 as pattern (2 dc into each space)
Round 4 as round 3 (2dc into each space)
Round 5 1dc into each space
Round 6 1 dc into each space

I used double knitting and a 4.5mm hook.  It measures 3" across.  I might have another go at something else later but am quite pleased with this one for now.

That's quite effective, well done. I crochet baby blankets for people at work and they think they are hard to do, well I can do em while watching tv and checking I've put enough stitches or not too many as I go along. Perhaps they are too lazy to learn! I use half treble and gets done quick. The kids love them. I'm stopping doing them before long as I buy the wool as well!

Well done Casaiguidi, looks lovely.
Yes Weste, I don't think people realise just how much wool it takes to do baby blankets - can be expensive!

For free or cheap try your local freecycle or freegle, also charity shops.

Casalguidi that's brilliant! I've done a few flowers before just to practise but your pattern looks very straightforward.

I love crochet as it grows so fast - and as there's only one stitch at a time, if I drop it or make a mistake it's easy to sort out (unlike knitting where I always end up with a different number of stitches on the needle  :() After seeing the baby blanket I made for granddaughter, my daughter asked for a large bed throw - boy did I get hot with that across my knees as it grew!

Off to get red wool at the weekend...

I did a rummage through my button store after having little play this week :D I went with the flow, not by any pattern and did 3 while following something on TV. Did the bigger one first, type of yarn hides the stitches and 4 individual petals sewn together, yarn not easy to thread and sew with! Did another one in same style with DK acryllic I found in my supplies. The one by thumb is a one piece, much quicker and simpler, just done in doubles, trebles and chain ...

They look lovely, well done.  It looks like you have done some in black wool by the buttons, was this done in crochet, or did you stitch it on after?  Really effective however if you did it.

Ta  :) ...

Ann I was making it up as I went along, as is usually the way for me, trial and error... I had some black acrylic out to sew on the buttons but started trying to build up the centre of the small one with the separate petals as I stitched it together, without using a button. I did start to sew black at the base of each petal but effect I wasn't quite right, so just made it a bit fuller in middle with stamens out the side of the centre. The big one has two buttons with short ends of black wool sandwiched between for stamens and with the easy one I just used some short ends of black under one upside down small trouser button ...

They're gorgeous, I particularly love the big fluffy one and look forward to seeing everybody elses pics ........ I haven't done any more yet.

Lizdb, I presume they can be almost any size though looking at the pics of last years in place (link on first post) I would think about 3-4" would you say?

Well, just what I have been looking for.  :)

Thank you so much for putting the links and the piccies on this topic.

I have now done 14 in different shapes and sizes.

Some in wool, although I prefer the crocheted ones, I think.

Hubby used to say when can I have the table back to eat my dinner,  ::)
now it is when can I have a snooze on the bed as it is covered in patterns,
wool etc.

On a more serious note what a beautiful way to remember loved ones.

Ahem ... piccies please Sandy  ;) ... of the poppies, not of the hubby or the bed  :P ... though it brings to mind my landlady when I first left home and the lovely crochet bedspread she made while I was there, numerous squares of creamy white with raised flowers in the centre in assorted pastel shades, looked wonderful on bed when squares all joined up.

I can not seem to manage the knitted ones as the increase and decrease
at the sides seems really untidy, so I will stick to the crocheted ones. ;D

I have just found hidden behind a pile of magazines a Woman's Weekly Special
October edition asking for folk to help make Poppies for the Royal British Legion.

I was asked by some one who wanted some of mine how would folk wear them if
they wanted to put through a button hole.

Answer is in the article as it has leaves crocheted also.  :) Hurrahhhhhh.  :)

Hi.

I wonder if anyone else has been able to do the patterns in the Woman's Weekly.

I tried both patterns to no avail as they did not turn out right.  :(

It is the wrap1 on the knitted pattern, at the end of a row.

Therefore I tried making one to put on a card, hubby made the little envelope for me.  :)

I put the Poppy on a velcro button so it can be removed and worn if needed.

Off to see "Scimmers" and his gang in a while.

I just love your card and poppy seahall. What a lovely idea (was this in the magazine).  I did consider buying it but when I saw the price (as had already got a pattern and done some and sent to the project) I decided against it as the poppy article was all I would have been interested in. (some might call me mean but £4!)

Thank you, greatly appreciated.  :)

Ann I designed it, so no it was not in the mag. You are not mean. :)

Sarah you should see my craft room and dinning table which are a utter mess,
surprised I get anything usuable out of it.  :)

Mare whilst at an event recently when I said about my card to another person who also
made them, she said that she put a painted poppy behind the one that was crocheted,
therefore you still had one on the card, that is using your imagination to full capacity.  ;D  ;D  ;D

I love them too, and am full of admiration for you hard working and skilful RC-ers.    :D

I can't contribute, but we do have this poppy blooming just in time for Remembrance Day, provided the hot winds don't completely burn it off, and the sun fade them all. This one has already faded from the red it was to begin with.

I think I must have missed the last few postings of the thread  :-\ may not have seen the notification.

Wonderful assortment Sandy and Sarah, very productive.  :)

A friend has been knitting poppies for a local project lately and the pattern is very simple, so thought I'd share ...

50 stitches Red DK   needle size approx 3.25/10 - 4.5/7 to suit
10 rows K2 P2 Rib
2nd last row K2 tog across row ( row 11 )
last row Sl 1 K2 tog across row
thread wool through loops and draw up
stitch up end edges to form cup of poppy

I used some scraps of 4 ply last night and made two using smaller needles, 2.75/12
Second one I put on only 44 stitches and did 8 rows of rib and then decreased.
I haven't done the centres yet, may use a black button but friend knitted hers

.. 10 stitches Black DK
K 8 rows, cast off

Thought just now that I could have done the two decreasing rows in black, would probably look right and simplify it more :)

Not sure if I will still get it done as it is not the colour of a poppy that I
really like which is bright red.

That is what the front of the kit is but not inside.  :(

As Hubby brought me the kit and it cost £60 I ought to try.

Only got this far lol.

As Hubby was going to put it on the adhesive board  this morning

I could not have left it, so I re-stitched it and then sent him to the shop

I'd probably not have wanted to leave it either, once I'm aware of something I could improve upon, even if others wouldn't notice... and as long as I wasn't going to overwork or spoil it in doing so. We're hard on ourselves though, depriving ourselves of sleep!

Of course yes, take that rest,  I knew teacher Dee would agree  :D
