Good morning,
My gt/gmother, grandad and his sister entered Withington workhouse in 1901 (found this on Find My Past). Gt g/mother died in there a few months later then the children, aged about 8 & 10, were discharged soon after. Does anyone know how to find out where they may have gone or who took them in etc.,
The next record i can find is my grandad on 1911 census.
Thanks :-\

Hi Shemmers
Your best bet would be the workhouse records which should tell you what happened to the children.
Here's information about where the records are: -

Best of luck

More info, and pictures, of the workhouse here:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Chorlton/
That article says, of records:
Relatively few records survive — holdings include: Lists of emigrant children sent to Canada and other countries (1889-1947, indexed); Ledgers (1837-1915) with gaps; etc.

Thanks, will have a look at those sites.

Perhaps they were sent to Australia or Canada as "home children"?
If you wanted to post the details maybe someone could have a look for you?
best wishes

Interesting Maria. I think mum would have mentioned that at some point. I am presuming my grandad stayed in the Manchester area, he was from Hulme originally then ended up in Cheetham Hill in 1911. :)
