Title: DEWELL of Woodbridge
Post by: Debe on Tuesday 23 July 13 00:32 BST (UK)
My 3x great grandmother was Ann DEWELL born possibly 1782 at Woodbridge to unknown parents.

On December 06 1803 she married Andrew FOSDIKE in Suffolk, possibly at Woodbridge and she died January 1836 after a 'long affliction' according  to a notice published 10 February 1836 in the Bury and Norwich Post and was buried 14 January 1836 at St Mary's Woodbridge.

She gave birth to 5 known children over the period 1804 to 1821, 2 of whom died in infancy but were all baptised at St Mary's, Woodbridge.

According to  Pigot & Co 1830 Directory for Suffolk she was a dressmaker, living with her husband Andrew in Well Street Woodbridge.

I so far have been  unable to locate a birth/ baptismal record for her so do not know her father, mother or even if she had any siblings. I would appreciate some  help with this 'brick wall' as I would dearly love to know more of  Ann's background prior to her marriage.

Thanks
Deb

Hello Deb

I can see the marriage of the couple in Woodbridge & I can find just one Dewell burial in that parish
Charles DEWELL buried 22 Aug 1834 age 28, Woodbridge St Mary (Cholera seemingly the cause).

However I found these 2 entries
Sarah DEWELL buried 10 Dec 1809 Martlesham
Samuel DEWELL of Woodbridge buried 19 Dec 1816 age 77 Martlesham.
The Woodbridge connection might be a clue.

But these are the only 2 DEWELL burials in Martlesham.

But there are lots of DEWELL burials in Bredfield.  Starting with the burial if
Samuel DEWELL infant 11 Jul 1777

A Samuel DEWELL married in 1776 at Easton (probably to Frances COTTON)
Frances wife of Samuel (abode Bredfield) was buried at Easton All Saints 23 Jan 1779
Looks like Samuel may have married again
Samuel DEWELL married in 1780 at Bredfield (probably to Sarah HENDY)

So perhaps someone can check the Bredfield PRs for you & see if Ann was bapt there (or even the Martlesham PRs).

There is also a marriage on the LDS of one Francis DEWELL to Letitia CURTIS 20 Jul 1807 at Martlesham (poss son of Samuel & Frances?)

Bredfield, Easton & Martlesham are all in close proximity to Woodbridge.

Sorry it is just thoughts but might kick start something.
Good luck
K

Thanks Keziah, that has given me another avenue to follow. I have been struggling on this lady for some time now and did wonder if she had come from somewhere else so will now turn  my attention to Bredfield. Uncovering any more about who she was  before marrying in Woodbridge has been  one of my more difficult challenges. Parents and siblings are now my priority in my research on my 3x g granny Ann.

Thanks for your suggestions. In clutching at straws I keep thinking the names of her children may have been clues; they were Robert ( her father in law) Ann,(possibly named after her or perhaps her mother) Elizabeth & Andrew (possibly named after her husband). Perhaps the Elizabeth was her mother or sister. As I said clutching at straws :)

Many thanks
Deb

Hello Deb

Trouble is there is nothing online for Bredfield.  Your only hope is that someone can look at the PRs for you.

The Suffolk FHS does have a CD to purchase, which includes baptisms in Bredfield, Woodbridge and many of the other parishes in the area but that starts at 1813 to 1900 (Carlford & Wilford Deaneries) so won't help solve your problem.  www.suffolkfhs.co.uk

Thanks Keziah,

As you say 1813 to 1900 is just a bit too late for Ann, if she was baptised at Bredfield.

It has been suggested that some Baptism Registers for Bredwell St Andrew for the period 1718-1813 may be missing or lost. It appears they are the ones I need! So I guess it is back to the drawing board so to speak >:(
Thanks anyway,

Deb

Andrew Fosdike is likely a part of my extended family as I have Fosdike's in the area.

I found an Ann Dewell baptised in 1781 in Bredfield, daughter of William and Mary. I checked for any very inconvenient burial of Ann as an infant but found none thankfully. The baptism info is from Suffolk Baptism Index on FindMyPast.

Goodness me,

Ann Dewell and Andrew Fosdike had a daughter Annie (1810-1875) who married John Allen in 1836 and their son John (1843-1912) was my great grandfather.

John came to New Zealand 1869 with his first wife Jessie Page and after Jessie died in 1870 he married Ellen Godso and they were my g grandparents.

John and Jessie had no children

Hi,
Sorry I do not know as yet where he originated from but he married Mary BRANCH at Bredfield
in 1778 according to Suffolk Marriage Index CD (1754-1812 ). Yet to find out where Mary  came from.

Indeed, who knows,  :)

I have learnt that people did move around quite a bit in those early days so it could quite conceivably happen that a branch did move to Ipswich.
