Title: Brewery Brighton
Post by: Murrell on Saturday 20 July 13 17:21 BST (UK)
Anyone know about the brewery in Brighton? I have my husbands paternal Grandmother working there as a bottle washer in 1916.  On the 1911 census his maternal grandfather is a brewers labourer again at the brewery.
Was it a big employer in Brighton?
I have another question too, Where was the Preece's Buildings located again in Brighton.
Thanks in advance.  :)

Hi Murrell,

Do you have an address from the census - it might help jog memories?

My Great Grandfather was a publican in Brighton - as was his father before him - and people working in the pub were sometimes (mistakenly) referred to as "brewer's labourer / porter" and the like.

I've just asked my Mum who grew up in the area and she doesn't know of one specifically in Brighton - but Hastings and Lewes, yes.  The Granddaughter of a Publican - she - and I have remained resolutely tee-total and the brewery has obviously passed us by!

(That's a lovely photo Rosie!  ;D )

I was a student living in Brighton in the early-mid 60's and remember the local beers as Edlin's and Tamplin's.

 ;D Thank you Roy G - interesting.

It seems that yet another member of that generation was running a Brighton Pub!

Wow I'm so impressed with the replies you have all made. The census and marriage certs does not state address of which brewery. Thank you so much I now have something to work on.

Anyone know answer to my second question re- Preece's Buildings, the location?

This site is excellent, such knowledgeable folk  ;)

I think you may have missed Rosie's answer to the Preece's Buildings query.
After referring to your message, she gave you a link to a photograph of the site and simply wrote:

It might be worth looking through the records for Brighton pubs at www.pubhistory.com - you might find your ancestors listed under one of the census or Piggott references.  I've found this a most valuable site for some of my ancestors who ran pubs in Hastings and Lewes and in Oxfordshire.  The site used to be called deadpubs.co.uk

Have a look at "Historical Directories" -
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbykeyword.asp

To search (drop down menus), "location" = Sussex, "decade" = 1900s, "key name" = Kelly. In "own keywords" enter 786.

Should deliver "Kelly's Directory of Sussex 1905" - click on "Directory" and click on "Next hit". Should be seeing page 786 with a list of Sussex Breweries

Good morning all and thank you for the may reponses. I took a look at the site Rosie mentioned and when viewing Preece's Buildings there is a cart shown to the left of the photo. The lettering is showing part of the name Humphrey, my husbands paternal g.grandfather was a fisherman with a boat and from what I can understand they had a seashell stall on the front at Brighton. Double whammy wow.
Regarding the brewery the family only worked there, and I have no evidence as yet that any of them ran a pub.  ;D

You never know, they might have done so.  The pubhistory site does contain census records for the pubs and in each case lists all people who were living there.
