Title: Bramley by Leeds
Post by: Pennines on Friday 19 July 13 17:52 BST (UK)
Hello Everyone,

I wonder if someone could help me with a local geography question please?

I am trying to untangle my Chapman family who at one point lived in Bramley by Leeds (17th and 18th centuries) ---however in Parish Records for St Peter's Church, Leeds and also for St Peter's Bramley (if this is a different building) --- I am coming across Chapmans from both 'Mil Hil' (possibly this should be 'Mill Hill' and from Bramley.

Can anyone with local knowledge advise me if 'Mil Hil' is an area within Bramley --- or a different place altogether, perhaps an area in Leeds itself.

many thanks in advance and in hope!

Regards June

Doing a search for Mill Hill Leeds, this points to the Unitarian chapel in the centre of Leeds.
St Peter's Church is up the road from me in Bramley 8)

Brian -- thank you very much for your speedy reply.

When you say St Peters Church is up the road from you in Bramley ---- on the West Yorks Parish records on Ancestry -- there is also a St Peter's Church, Leeds. Are these 2 different churches please?

Is Bramley an area on the outskirts, but also has a St Peters?

Some records in the St Peters Leeds registers seem to incorporate 'Bramley' events -- and other area events -- Guiseley etc.

I am finding it quite confusing.

Sorry to be a pain!

June

Here in Bramley we have 1 church - St Peter's, plus we have the Zion Baptist Chapel.
St Peter's church Leeds is the main church for Leeds - Now called Leeds Minster.
Two different areas 6miles apart.
[Parish records for the Leeds St Peter's are available to view online at Genuki:

[Parish records for Guiseley are available online also on Genuki:

The 6 miles apart is SO helpful, Brian - thank you. I was beginning to wonder if the 2 St Peter's were the same church.

Many thanks also for the tip about the transcribed St Peter's, Leeds records being on Genuki. These records show that there are several years after 1638 missing, which probably explains the problems I am having tracking my ancestors.

You have been a great help.

If you get desperate I have the missing years in a pdf format that I can look at!
[Correction, I have 1572 - 1776 which should cover the missing years?]

What a really lovely offer --- I won't trouble you unless I have to!

It's fortuitous that you are called 'Calverley Lad' --- can you also kindly tell me if Calverley is close to Bramley please (this will be my final 'pester') --- one of my Bramley ancestors, Abram or Abraham Chapman, may have married a Mary Ross -- who MAY have been born in Calverley, daughter of Jonathan Ross (Or maybe not!!). A Jonathan Ross died in Bramley in 1747 - and I am wondering therefore if the Ross family moved from Calverley to Bramley -- hence Mary Ross met Abram Chapman there!

It's difficult assessing these things from a map -- it's much better hearing from someone who is familiar with the area.

My last question -- honestly! You have been far too kind, Brian -- otherwise I wouldn't have dared ask it.

Regards June

PS If I can help you with any similar queries about East Lancashire -- please don't hesitate to ask!

As the crow flies about 3-4miles separate Bramley from Calverley.
