Title: Emily J PENWILL possibly HIGGS in Devon 1878
Post by: homeleejo on Thursday 18 July 13 18:43 BST (UK)
 :)
Hi i have drawn a blank in my research tracing the line of Emily Jane Penwill Born in Ermington Devon in 1878 to William and Emma Penwill. i have traces her 7 siblings but any further records of her have disappeared excluding on census where her surname changes from Penwill to Higgs but is still living within the family home?
Does anyone have a research on Devon Penwill's along this line

The 1901 census shows her as their married daughter - have you checked freebmd for her marriage?  I can't find one in the right timeframe

Where is she living in 1911

I've also checked 3 different places and cant find a marriage, very strange. I've tried looking for a marriage of a Higgs to an Emily, just in case it was a second marriage, but cant see anything.

I think emily has a habit of living with a chap and using his surname withuot the benfit of clergy.

There's a 1916 marriage of an Emily J Penwill to Frederick Bawden in Devonport  [ancestry has him as Hawden in her entry]. They appear to be together as man and wife in 1911 - she's b Ermington c1878!

I wondered about that entry as well - no marriage pre-1911

Thank you i have also got her as the married daughter surname higg 1901 with her parents and Siblings, Then in 1911 the Family have split in 2 location one in Devon and One in cornwall but Emily is with neither set. i have been stuck on her for a while and cannot find an combnation for a Higgs Penwill including varied spelling as that has occured.  However the Bawden/Hawden link is of interest do you know if they had any children

thank you i was able to link this to a family memory of an Emily and Rosie Bawden, it would still be interesting to find out where Higgs came from.

It looks as if they married then when he enlisted - perhaps they had to do that so that she would get a pension if anything happened to him.

The marriage is registered in Q1 1916, so perhaps they were preplanning in the event he was called up.

Actually, the Military Service Act was passed in Jan 1916 and came into force in March. At first men from 18 to 41 years old would be liable to be called up for service in the army unless they fitted a number of categories, including being married. A second Act in May 1916 changed this so married men were enlisted. They may have married to avoid him being called up!
