This is my first post to Rootschat so not sure if I am doing it right. I recently discovered a number of posts related to Forbes ANGUS of Tarves but cannot reply to the original post, perhaps because it was too long ago. I am interested to find out the outcome of that thread.
I am a descendant of
Forbes ANGUS and Elizabeth LAMB also Alexander FORBES and Charlotte CLARK and am seeking any information about births, marriages and deaths, immigration etc.
James ANGUS & Jane FORBES - Scotland, NZ, Australia

Thank you for the interesting information on the FORBES family. I haven't pursued this line of the family yet.
I am interested in more info on George Shepherd ANGUS, youngest son of James ANGUS & Jane FORBES and where the middle names of the family members came from. You also said you had certificates. Would it be possible to get copies from you please?

Pictures of James ANGUS & Jane FORBES graves in Brighton Cemetery
Pictures of ship and ship's list 'James Nicol Fleming' arrived in NZ 1870
Would it be possible to share these please or tell me where I can find them for myself?

Can you remember what your solution to the confusion about Isabella ANGUS was? I do not think the one in Victoria (married to John Russell in 1884) fits this family
There were two Isabella ANGUSs in this family. (This name combination is not that uncommon - there were at least 4 in NZ alone)
1. Isabella Bothwell Forbes ANGUS b 2 Jul 1861 Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire
married William STRINGFELLOW 18 Sep 1889 in Christchurch, New Zealand and died in 1940 in NZ.
2. Isabella ANGUS b 3 Mar 1885 Christchurch, NZ daughter of Forbes ANGUS (son of James ANGUS) and Amy Florence HURST.
With the exception of Isabella Bothwell Forbes ANGUS who stayed in NZ the rest of the ANGUS family went to Australia. The HURST family went from Tasmania to NZ and then Victoria. I am interested in knowing when they came to Australia (around 1886?) and whether they travelled as family groups or separately. Any help appreciated.
I am willing to share anything I have.
Thanks
Dale

Hi Dale
.... welcome. :)
Here is the link which will take you to the (FORBES) thread you mention.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,356825.0.html
I'll need to take a good long look at this again to refresh my memory, before I can reply to your question. ;)

Thank you Lu. There are other threads that are also relevant BDM udny and death Forbes Angus 1800's tarves . I have studied these posts closely and made a methodical summary if that helps. The information I have is that the younger Isabella ANGUS (daughter of Forbes ANGUS) married John Edwin BURDEKIN. They had a son John Forbes BURDEKIN. I need to verify sources and get dates.
Any help with shipping would be great. I have a Mrs and Mrs Forbes ANGUS into Victoria in 1886 but the ship is marked as coming from a British port not New Zealand. I am not sure if it is them as their first 4 children were born in New Zealand and the youngest of these was born in 1889 so I think 1890 is more likely for their move to Australia.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Dale

Hello again Dale
Afraid I'm not able to offer you much more help with this search. I have no idea of whether the original poster on the earlier thread, resolved things - I didn't ever receive a reply to my question. ;D
From the Australian death index is the following (in case you don't have it).
BURDEKIN - John Forbes
Died at : Elsternwick, Victoria - 1973
Aged : 46 years [bc 1927 ]
Father: Edwin John
Mother: Isabella ANGUS

Thanks Lu. I realise that the original poster did not reply but your comment about having found a solution intrigued me. It was a long time ago.
Thank you for the info on John Forbes BURDEKIN.
I will now try and get the death certificates of James ANGUS, Forbes ANGUS and Alexander Forbes ANGUS (my GrGF).
I will keep searching the shipping records for when the ANGUS and HURST families came to Australia from NZ in the 1880s. The ships are designated B British Ports, N New Zealand and F Foreign. Is it possible that a ship from a British port would come via New Zealand to Australia and therefore be designated B rather than N? If so, then I should be looking for ships from both B and N.
Thank for for your welcome and help. It has made my first foray into rootschat a pleasant experience and encourages me to continue to use this forum to help me with my research.

Hi Dale
Not sure if you are aware, but there are a good number of other researchers who have submitted "trees" for both the (James / Forbes ) ANGUS and HURST families, at the ancestry.com website.
I think it would be worthwhile establishing contact with them, as they may already have copies of BMD certs. ... or at least be able to assist with your queries.
[Just in case you're not familiar with ancestry.com, - you need a subscription to the site in order to view these trees. Ancestry offer a free trial - or you can take out an "inexpensive" monthly subscription.]
Best of luck with your searching. :)

Hello I am related to these people and have some information on Victoria records but would love information on the nz link. I know that there was a lot of travel between nz and Melbourne by this family and they were sheep farmers in nz. I slso have a great picture of the angus family father james. I am doing this from my phone please email me

Thanks for your message. I am travelling just at the moment but will contact you again after the 7/11.

Thanks Lu, I started to look at other trees on ancestry.com but became frustrated by the errors. I got excited when I found a photo of James Angus but was then disappointed when the same photo was attached to two different individuals! I will approach it again and do what I can. I had looked at the HURST family previously which is how I found out that the ANGUS family went to NZ from Scotland before going to Australia. Thanks for your help. Dale

Hi lexx, I am a descendant (grand daughter) of Mary Forbes ANGUS, who was the daughter of Alexander Forbes ANGUS and grand daughter of James ANGUS. James ANGUS and his wife Jane FORBES went to NZ on the "James Nicol Fleming" which arrived in NZ in 1870.
----- From Passenger List
"James Nicol Fleming" - departed Greenock - 3 August 1870
Arrived Otago (Dunedin) - 26 October 1870 :
ANGUS - James, farm servant - Address: Green of Udny, Aberdeen.
ANGUS - Mrs Jane
ANGUS - (children - no ages given)
- Forbes / Jane / Isabella / Alexander / Robert / James / and Susan
How are you related to this family?
What do you know about their travel between NZ and Australia?
I am interested in the photo of James ANGUS but as I mentioned in my response to Lu, I would like to verify that it is actually him, i.e. what is the source, when was it taken, where and what was the occasion etc?
James ANGUS and Jane FORBES and all of their children (and their spouses and offspring) except Isabella Bothwell Forbes ANGUS came to Victoria possibly around 1890, though from what you say it suggests that they may have moved between NZ and Australia more often. I would be interested to know more about this.
1. Their son Forbes ANGUS b 10 Nov 1858, Old Meldrum, Aberdeen, Scotland married Amy Florence HURST on 30 May 1883, in Christchurch, New Zealand. They had 13 children. Their first 4 children were born in NZ.
Amy Elizabeth Jane ANGUS b 21 Mar 1884, Christchurch, New Zealand
Isabella ANGUS b 3 Mar 1885, Christchurch, New Zealand
Drucilla ANGUS b 20 Feb 1887, Christchurch, New Zealand
William Forbes ANGUS b 17 Dec 1889 Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand
Their fifth and sixth children Esther and James Tasman were born in Victoria, Australia in 1890 both died shortly after birth. The remaining children were all born in Victoria and died in Victoria (except Jessie George ANGUS).
Eva Hurst ANGUS b 5 May 1892
Forbes Alexander ANGUS b 28 Oct 1893
Robert Keep ANGUS b 28 Apr 1895
Jessie George ANGUS b 5 Dec 1897 d France 19 Nov 1917
Florence Mary ANGUS b 23 Feb 1899
Beryl Ismay ANGUS b 4 Nov 1900
George Douglas ANGUS b 1904
2. Their daughter Jane Gordon ANGUS b 5 Apr 1860 Old Meldrum, Aberdeen, Scotland married Samuel Young LOVE on 27 Dec 1882 in Christchurch, New Zealand
They had 5 children. I have not yet checked where the children were born but the first 3 may be in NZ and the last 2 in Victoria.
3. Isabella Bothwell Forbes ANGUS married William STRINGFELLOW on 18 Sep 1889 in NZ. They had one daughter Isabella Ann STRINGFELLOW DOB ? Isabella Bothwell Forbes ANGUS d 19 Jan 1940 and William STRINGFELLOW d 31 Aug 1918 died at Timaru, South Canterbury, New Zealand and are buried in Geraldine Cemetery, New Zealand.
4. Alexander Forbes ANGUS married Eva Lillian HURST (sister of Amy Florence HURST) on 15 Jan 1896 at Rathdowne St. Carlton, Victoria, Australia. These are my direct ancestors. They had 6 children including Mary Forbes ANGUS who was my grandmother.
5. Robert Bothwell ANGUS b Udny, Aberdeen, Scotland d 2 Jul 1942 Springvale, Victoria, Australia
6. Susan Riddel ANGUS b 11 Dec 1867 Udny, Aberdeen, Scotland, married and died in Victoria
7. James ANGUS b 11 Dec 1867 Udny, Aberdeen, Scotland, married and died in Victoria
8. Jessie Stephen b 4 May 1869 Udny, Aberdeen, Scotland d bef 1871 in Scotland
9. Magdalene Smith ANGUS b 1871 in NZ married Francis Thomas KARTON date? son James Angus KARTON in 1893 in Victoria
10. George ANGUS b 1874 in NZ
As you can see there are still gaps. I went to Aberdeen in Scotland in 2012 and visited Oldmeldrum, Tarves and Udny Green. I have some further information about Scotland although some of it needs to be verified.
I would appreciate any information that you could share with me.
Thanks
Dale
