Title: Date needed for unknown relative
Post by: Alan19 on Tuesday 16 July 13 22:41 BST (UK)
Have had this photo for some time which was found in my grandmothers effects and I believe it was probably past down to her. We have always assumed this to be my grandfathers brother Wilfred Baldock born 1905 in Rye Sussex. When I forwarded a copy to his grandaughter, I was surprised to find out that her Wilfred was in the Navy and the uniform in the photo appears to be Army, and now I believe WW1.

The rear of the photo states "son of WJ and L Baldock. I now believe this to be William James and Eliza Baldock (previously Nash). They had children born in Rye between 1875 and 1892 but unfortunately no Wilfred. I am therefore wondering whether this could be a middle name of one of their sons, namely Alfred 1881 or Ernest 1885, or an undiscovered sibbling.

Anything that you can tell me about the photo would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

You need to put a link to this on the armed forces board in order to recognise his Regt.
Have to say the collar dogs looks Polish or German to me.
The uniform could be USA they also used eagle collar dogs.

I didn't think it looked British either Jim, but could be wrong. Those collar badges are distinctive. I would follow Jim's advice and link to the Armed Forces board.

Thanks for the quick responses. Have also wondered whether the uniform wasn't British. Up to now there hasn't been any of the Baldocks that appear to have emigrated but this could now be a possibility to explore.

Silly question, is there an easy way of linking this to the armed forces board or will I have to add it as a new topic?

Thanks again.

Hi Alan, you could just copy and paste the link from this thread (below) onto a new thread on the Armed Forces board, which will give them the link to this. Or re-post the photo on there in a new thread but you will have to give the photo a different file name first.

Are you sure you've put it on.
This is where it should be but I can't see it.

Have tried again but think it might appear twice now as this has now appeared.

The Collar badges (collar dogs) look like Royal Scots Greys

I agree with James. He was in a British cavalry regiment. I also think the uniform is from the very end of WW1 into the 1920s, maybe even 1930s. So he could be the one born in 1905, and he was too young for WW1.

The service records of men discharged after 1920 are still with the MOD. They charge £30 and it can take 6-9 months. You could try the regimental museum first. They may not have any individual records. If they do they probably will not give you a copy. But they may be able to confirm he served with them. You should also ask for his army number. The MOD may insist on you providing his number. They will require a copy of his death certificate as well.

Based on that there's a Wilfred James b.1906 Rye to Wilfred James Baldock & Maria in 1911.

Thanks to everyone for their work and input on this one. Shame I appear to be back where I started in that the Wilfred born 1906 who appears to be the best candidate, was in the navy. Have checked with his family who are definate about this.

Thanks again.
