Title: Shittlehope Burn Farm *COMPLETED*
Post by: max777 on Wednesday 10 July 13 02:25 BST (UK)
Hi Forum,
Would any local people of the Stanhope area know the history of Shittlehope Burn Farm. My great grandparents and grandmother lived there around 1908-10 before grandmother left for Aust. Have attached photos.

Well, it shows up on a map from 1856-1865: http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
There must be some earlier ones somewhere.

If you don't have any luck with your request here, a local history society may be able to help you(Stanhope possibly?)  :-\

What was the surname of your family and do you know how long they lived there? eg have you found them living there in the censuses?

The surname is Forrest (John & Mary) Their time at the farm would have been after, 1901 as they were there for the 1911 census.

So your family were elsewhere in the 1901 census?

Is there anything specific you would like to find out about the farm? Previous owners? When built? Something else?

I believe there are ways of researching the history of a house, presumably via deeds, sales, tithe records perhaps(?), but I'm afraid I can't help with the specifics. Someone else may know though.

Thanks Ruskie....not sure if g/grandfather rented or owned the farm ..... I suppose if someone happens to know or where to look for the history of its owners/occupiers it would be great.

I think that if using FindMyPast, there is the ability to search via address, so perhaps someone will be kind enough to look up the farm address in earlier censuses to see who is living there.

They are in "Shittlehope Burn" in 1901:

John Forrest 53 farmer on own account b Hexham Northumberland
Mary Forrest 55 also b Hexham
Sarah Forrest 24
George Forrest 21
Emma Forrest 19
Maria Forrest 16
Albert Forrest 12 grandson
Mary H Wilkinson 4 grandaur
(all children b Stanhope)
RG13/ Piece 4660/ Folio 35/ Page 12

Address not given specifically as "Shittlehope Burn Farm", but there are a couple of other families living at same address (quarrymen) so perhaps your family were living at the farm, with the other families lving in farm buildings at same address.  :-\

Unsure if John's occupation as "farmer on own account" means that he owns or rents the farm. Someone else may know.  :)

In 1891 their address is Wards Villa Stanhope:

John Forrest 43 Farmer b Allendale Town Northumberland
Mary Forrest 45
Hannah Forrest 20 farmer's daur
John William Forrest 18 limestone quarryman
Sarah Ann Forrest 14
George Forrest 11
Emma Forrest 9
Thomas Forrest 7
Maria Forrest 6
Albert Forrest 2 grandson
(all children b Stanhope)
Class: RG12; Piece: 4084; Folio: 107; Page: 3; GSU

And in 1881 the family the address is Thimbleby Hill. John is a labourer b Allendale. You can look this one up yourself for free if you haven't already done so.  :)

Thanks again Ruskie....yes I have those census...it was an oversight on my part re 1901. Are you able to find who was there at the farm in 1861 and 71?

Cheers
Max

Sorry Max, I don't have a subscription to FindMyPast. Hopefully someone who has will be able to look the farm up for you in earlier years.  :)

The 1881 census shows a 30 year old Thomas Heads and wife Jane A. Heads (with nephew William J Heads, father William Peacock and farm servants Elizabeth Robinson and Joseph Oliver) living in Shittlehope Burn, his occupation is described as a farmer of 42 acres employing 2 servants.

I can only surmise that things didn't go well, as a newspaper article in December 1884 has the farm up for let and an April 1885 article reveals that Thomas Heads is leaving Shittlehope Burn farm and is disposing of his stock.

Edited to add: The farm is up for sale in 1864, the farmhouse is occupied by a Mr Curry and a Thomas Emmerson (the latter also the tenant for the associated meadow / woodland called Wright's Field and Woody Bank), in addition there is a further cottage and a meadow called Meadowfield with tenants William Wilkinson and Thomas Emmerson and a right of way onto Shittlehope Common.

There is a William Wilkinson, widower (and family) at Shittlehope Burn in the 1861 cesus - he is a railway platelayer so unsure if he is the same one living there in 1864.

There is also a George VIckers farmer of 44 acres. He is a 74 year old widower, and his 48 year old unmarried son John is "manager of farm".

On the other side of William Wilkinson is another farmer at Shittlehope Burn - Joseph Currah(?) a 41 year old farmer of 65 acres, plus his family.

Unsure if either/both of those might be the owner/tennant of Shittlehope Burn Farm in 1861.
