Title: Knockbride marriage
Post by: rainbowuk on Tuesday 09 July 13 11:12 BST (UK)
Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could help.

My 3rd great grandparents, John MANGAN and Mary GALLIGAN were married 1845 in the parish of Knockbride. ( I got this information from their sons birth cert in scotland) I have checked the civil registration index but cant see a marriage. They moved to Scotland about the time of their marriage.

According to their death certs in Scotland, John was born abt 1822 County Cavan to James MANGAN and Susan MARKIES. Mary was born abt 1824 County Cavan to Thomas GALLIGAN and Mary McMANUS

Thanks in advance for any help

Susan

Could they have been married in a Catholic church? Civil registration of non-catholic marriages started in 1845 but registration of Catholic marriages only in 1864.

Some of the pay to view sites might have the marriage records. otherwise there should be a copy in the National Library in Dublin, and PRONI in Belfast also have them. This is what PRONI has:

R.C. Knockbride (Kilmore diocese) Baptisms, 1835-79; marriages, 1835-79; deaths, 1835-76   MIC1D/82.

Unfortunately the PRONI and National Library copies are not on-line and  a personal visit is normally required to access them. (You can ask PRONI if they will do a look up but there will almost certainly be a fee).

Here is an interesting memoir from Owen Peter Mangan who was born at Billyhill, Parish of Knockbride.
